Rio carnival 2014: Brazil is home to world-well-known parties and festivals that take place all year round. Every year, the town of Rio de Janeiro hosts some 3 million foreign tourists and they all contribute year round to the festive mood.
The Rio carnival is celebrated annually starting two Saturdays prior to and finishing one day prior to Ash Wednesday. The Rio carnival or street party is known as Mardi Gras.
Having taken place on the streets of Rio de Janeiro since 1823, the 5-day Carnival (Carnival in Portuguese) is e celebration of carnal pleasures, taking place just prior to Lent. In Rio carnival 2014, the street party will celebrate between February 28th until March 4th, with different incidents taking place all over the Rio town during that time.
The main incident of the street party every year is the Samba Parade in the Sambodromo. Samba Parade is a joint show and competition in which the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro fight with each other to put on the best shows for the parades. These will take place on Sunday 2nd March and Monday 3rd, with the major parade of the samba schools in the particular Group taking place on every of these two evenings.
