Borghese Gallery and Museum
by Ferhat G. Roman TravelerThe gallery is a magnificent repository of art, particularly
of the classical and baroque periods. The opulent lower floor (the museo)
houses the sculpture, with the paintings on the upper floor (the galleria). The
gallery is housed in the summer house, or casino, of the Villa Borghese, built
by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a man ‘devoted to the cultivation of pleasures
and pastimes’ as the Venetian ambassador of the day described him. The nephew
of Pope Paul V, he pursued his love of art ruthlessly, even stealing paintings
that he coveted: he had ’s Deposition removed from the Baglioni family chapel
in Perugia at dead of night.
He was one of the greatest patrons and collectors of his day
and much of what is now in the gallery was his - although many of his pictures
and sculptures were sold off before the state purchased the collection from his
descendants in 1902. The exhibits include the famous family collection brought
here from the Palazzo Borghese (see page 66) in 1891. Among the paintings you can
still see Raphael’s Deposition, and there is a whole room of Caravaggios, as
well as works by Rubens, Bassano, Dossi, Titian, Antonello da Messina,
Pinturicchio and Domenichino.
