Blood Pressure Cuff and Blood Pressure

by Uni Med Market
When we have pressure monitoring in the hospital, doctors wrap the blood pressure monitor cuff to our upper arm to reading the pressure level. Do you know what a blood pressure cuff is?

The definition of the blood pressure cuff
The BP Cuff belongs to class ii medical supplies. In clinical, it is to measure patients' blood pressure levels. There are disposable cuffs and reusable cuffs with single-tube or double tubes. The inner bladder of the cuff is made of TPU material or nylon. The TPU is much more comfortable in use, and the nylon is durable in use. We can choose either of them according to our demands.

During the blood pressure measurement, except for patients’ condition, the position of the cuff and stethoscope also affect pressure reading. During the pressure monitoring, the correct cuff placement is to wrap it on the upper arm with the lower edge of the cuff is 2-3cm to the elbow. The stethoscope is on the brachial artery in the elbow.

Why the placement of the cuff affects blood pressure reading
Generally, we thought it related to the pressure of the cuff. According to the Mechanics pressure=pressure/forced area (P=f/s), during the monitoring, when the large-area connection between the cuff and upper arm, the high pressure is. It causes a smaller connection area and higher pressure when placing the cuff to the elbow with the stethoscope under it. And the first pulsation is delayed when the cuff deflation. There will be an error of low systolic blood pressure.

How does blood pressure cuff affect pressure reading?

Too tight cuff suffers pressure before air inflation which leads to lower readings. And too loose cuff causes higher BP reading. Thus, when wrapping the cuff, we have to make it as appropriate tightness.

How to choose a blood pressure cuff?
First, we have to decide which type of cuff to choose, reusable or disposable BP cuff. The reusable cuff will apply to multi-patient and have disinfection after use. And disposable BP cuff for only one patient use. Thus, we can choose cuffs according to the severity of patients. For patient have weak immunity or is related to infectious disease, we can use disposable cuff. For daily regular blood pressure, we can use reusable cuffs.

For the size of the cuffs, there are also different requirements for different people.  The cuff width of the sphygmomanometer should be 40% of the upper arm circumference, and the bladder length of the cuff should be 80% of it. If the upper arm. If the cuff is too narrow, the blood pressure measured is too high, and if the cuff is too long, the blood pressure measurement is low.
