BlackBerry Priv: no security patch for the ultra-secure smartphone

by Find Mobile Price Find Mobile Price

Two years after its release, the BlackBerry Priv no longer receives a security patch. This should mark the end of this smartphone known for its safety. However, BlackBerry is careful to accompany its users in the transition.

BlackBerry has always been known for the safety of its products. Among them are the BlackBerry Priv, released at the end of 2015 and marking a milestone in the history of the Canadian brand since it was the first to run Android.

As the name implies, this encrypted smartphone was intended primarily to protect the privacy of the user. However, in keeping with its policy on security support - which lasts two years for each terminal - BlackBerry announced that Priv no longer receives a security patch.

Do not panic

However, the firm said it will continue to meet all its warranty obligations. In addition, "if a critical vulnerability is discovered, we will engage our partners as needed to develop and deliver the necessary patches," reads in the post blog published by BlackBerry.

And to really get things right, BlackBerry also promises to set up an exchange program for Priv users - even BB10 and BBOS users. They can opt for a KEYone or a BlackBerry Motion (both models are out this year) at a reduced price.

What you need to know for BB10 and BBOS

BlackBerry Priv under BB10 and BBOS, for their part, will continue to receive security updates for at least another two years. However, in return, secondary applications will disappear:

§  the BlackBerry World application store will close on December 31, 2019;

§  ditto for the BlackBerry Travel Travel app, in February 2018;

§  and the Playbook video call platform, in March 2018.
