by Navratan Gems Navratan.com | Buy Certified Loose

August's birthstones are natural peridot, spinel, and sardonyx. The real peridot birthstone is well-known for its formation under severe circumstances.

Since it is available in both solidified lava that went deep inside the Earth's Mantle and meteorites, it came from outer space.

Until recently, the spinel birthstone was undervalued, as modern customers sought an alternative to ruby. It is a gem with which red spinel was often confused for decades. Sardonyx was the original August birthstone, dating back to almost 4,000 years ago. Discover more about these three August birthstones and the ideal present for individuals born in August.

History of peridot:

Natural peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine that ranges from yellowish-green to greenish-yellow. Peridot is an igneous rock that's available in the earth's Mantle. It consists of igneous rock that forms the upper part of the Earth Mantle. Its pyroxene and olivine shine under artificial lightning.

It doubles as a night stone and day stone. Another name of Peridot is Evening Emerald. It's believed that it emerged from the tears of Pele, the goddess of the volcano.

Real peridot has often got mistaken with other gems such as topaz and emerald throughout history. Topazios, a Red Sea island believed to be the origins of the term "topaz," actually produced peridot.

The largest peridot ever found weighs 319 Carat. The stone got preserved in the Smithsonian Institute of Washington DC. The stone that landed in Siberia contains peridot jewels. It is large enough to be used as jewelry.

The Shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany's Cologne Cathedral got adorned with 200 carats of stones that were first thought to be emeralds but are peridot, the month of August's birthstone. There is no doubt that it is a birthstone since it has a bizarre color.

It has a natural green color. According to some historians, Cleopatra's renowned emerald collection may have included peridot.

Ancient Egyptians believed the Natural peridot to be the stone of the Sun. The term "peridot" got derived from the Arabic faridat, which means jewel. August's birthstone is available in a variety of ancient and medieval civilizations.

For ages, the peridot birthstone has also been used as a protective amulet, protecting the wearer from bad spirits and "night terrors." Peridot is the gemstone traditionally presented to mark a 16th wedding anniversary.

Care and cleaning of peridot birthstones:

With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, peridot is softer than many other stones. Peridot cannot withstand excessive wear, making it unsuitable for everyday use in a ring. Additionally, this August, the birthstone got harmed by some acids and even prolonged contact with acidic sweat.

Peridot cleaning is a delicate procedure. Never clean your certified peridot birthstone with steam or ultrasonic cleaners, as it is susceptible to thermal shock. It is safest to use a soft-bristle brush in warm water with a little dish soap. Peridot should be stored carefully to avoid scratching by harder gems.
