BIG TEN/PAC 12 RUNNER-UP BOWL
Here's a hearty suggestion: Promote the second place teams of the Big Ten and Pac 12 together in a new bowl arrangement with the bowl location being in a different city (other than the LA area) provided the runner up teams are not selected for a higher other bowl. If selected for a higher bowl, then, the third place team of that conference would be selected to play in the Big Ten/PAC 12 runner-up bowl. Cities to be considered for this runner-up bowl are: Las Vegas, San Diego, and San Jose. Possible Names for this bowl: Silver Bowl if in Las Vegas in honor of the historic silver rush in Nevada; Sailor Bowl if in San Diego in honor of the large grouping of Navy Fores in and around San Diego: HiTech Bowl if in San Jose in honor of the high technology groups of Silicon Valley-San Jose being it's capital.
While I like the idea of competing the cities for this new bowl, San Diego is the only city with the capacity to host a major bowl with it's Qualcomm Stadium. This stadium has a capacity of approximately 70,000. The largest stadium in Las Vegas has a capacity of approximately 40,000, however, business entities in Las Vegas would no doubt be willing to increase the stadium capacity if they were assured of receiving this annual event. San Jose is a different situation. It would need to build a new state-of-the-art stadium in order to compete for this new bowl arrangement and I'm not convinced their are enough interest in San Jose to pull that off.
