Best Ways To Survive the Effects of the Harsh Temperature
The heat is killing. A man once made a comment here in Lagos
that, at the rate it is going, “people will soon start melting off the street”.
Heat Waves is a condition where there is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather like we are having in Nigeria presently. The two ways the body copes with heat are by perspiring and breathing. But when the body produces more heat than it can dispose of – weakness, cramps, seizures, dizziness, headaches and losing consciousness sets in – which are all symptoms of heat exhaustion. And if care isn't given to the person suffering from heat exhaustion, it can lead to heat stroke, in which the body's temperature exceeds 105 degrees.
Heat Stroke can damage the brain and other organs in the body, including the heart and kidneys. When the brain is damaged, people do not think correctly, and they can make rash decisions.
The body is just like a car. If you're driving and you notice that the temperature light comes on, it means the cooling system of the car is becoming overwhelmed. If you turn off the car and let it cool eventually you can start driving again. But if you continue to drive the car, the problem goes beyond the cooling system to affect the engine, and eventually the car will stop.
Now that you know that
heat waves can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, prevent yourself from
the side effects by doing the following:
1) Do not stay in hot environments for too long
2) Shift activities to evenings when the weather is cooler
3) Stay hydrated – take plenty of water
4) Stay in Cool environments – equipped with fans and air conditioners. With no light and scarce
Fuel supply, this is almost an impossible thing to achieve. So why not book a cheap hotel in Lagos or treat yourself to one of the top notch hotels in Abuja like Chelsea hotel Abuja or Rockview Hotel Abuja.
5) Go swim or take a bath often
6) Large hats and sun shades can help in reducing the effect of the sun
7) Avoid thick clothes, go for cotton that can easily absorb sweat
8) Due the weather condition, people tend to get tired easily. So when you feel tired – rest
