Philosophy & Curriculum

The Magic Cottage uses the innovative and exciting High Scope Curriculum, which is based on Piaget's developmental learning theories and stresses individualized education. No two children are the same. Ages, learning rates, and learning styles vary, so our teaching guidelines expand and adapt to support growth. Preschool Yardley provide the basic classroom structure and guidance that lets children continue to excel at their own rate.

Developmental Theory

Our teachers and caregivers know that your child is unique. And so is our program. We base our curriculum on the child developmental theories of Jean Piaget. His time-tested methods show that pre-school children learn best with individualized education.

Our curriculum adapts to help the child. The child doesn't change to meet our schedule. Our teachers use open-ended questions to encourage language development and to build your child's self-esteem.

Active Learning

Our curriculum is based on cognitive learning. We encourage your child to learn at his or her own pace. We believe that each child learns through action and doing, at his or her own developmental level.

Each of our classrooms allows for an active, safe, and structured environment that supports individualized learning. Children learn best by making choices that interest them.

Children's days follow a schedule comprised of readiness activities, planning and work time, constructive free play, group time, and circle time. Each activity features goals, challenges and, of course, fun.

Discipline

Magic Cottage provides a safe environment. Discipline is handled constructively, stressing the consequences of children's own actions and showing children choices.

We believe children should learn values and strategies that enable them to problem solve in difficult situations. We DO NOT use time out chairs or single out any child. Rather, we believe positive reinforcement is the best approach.

We reward responsibility and communication, and to show children how the benefits of approaching a problem in a positive way. We tell the children, "using our words is always better."
