Benefits of Installing an On-grid Solar System

by Diksha Sharma Blogger and writer

Solar rooftop systems are the most economical and accessible eco-friendly source of power available to us today. Home and business owners around the world are increasingly realizing this and making it their primary source of power. If this makes you want to go solar too, you must know that there are three types of the solar system, namely On-grid, Off-grid and Hybrid, and on-grid solar systems are considered to give the most benefits. Here’s how

On-Grid Systems - These are solar systems that are directly connected to the building mains. They draw minimum power from the grid to operate. These types of systems give priority to the energy generated from the solar system, and only if the generated power is less than needed, will the power from the grid will be drawn to fulfil your power need.

Power Consumers who opt for the on-grid systems are eligible for net metering, a process where all the excess energy that the system produces is exported to the grid, and the consumer gets compensated for the same.

Off-grid solar systems are different from the on-grid system in a way that they are independent from the grid.  These types of solar systems are largely accurate for the areas that don’t have power grid infrastructure. These systems have an additional battery backup system where the surplus power generated by the solar system is stored for later use such as during the night. .

A hybrid system is a combination of an off-grid and on-grid system. These solar systems are connected to the grid and also have a battery backup to store power for use when the solar system generates no power such as during the night time. In this type of solar system, once the battery is fully charged, any surplus power generated which is not being utilized is fed back to the grid and the user gets compensated accordingly via net-metering.

Now let's see what are the benefits of installing  On-Grid Solar system:

One of the most significant advantages of using an on-grid solar system is it increases financial benefits that one reaps after going solar by increasing the savings on electricity bills. Since in on-grid solar systems there is a facility of install net-metering, power consumers can export the surplus power generated from their solar system into the grid and earn compensation on the same. This increases their overall financial benefits.

Some of the other benefits of the on-grid solar system are:

  • On-grid solar systems are cheaper than off-grid and hybrid solar systems. This is because on-grid solar systems don’t require installing a battery, which reduces the cost significantly.

  • As the excess power generated by the on-grid solar system is exported to the grid in exchange for compensation, the solar investment gets recovered faster in case of on-grid solar systems.

  • The cost of maintenance is low in case of on-grid systems compared to hybrid and off-grid solar systems which require time to time replacement of batteries.

While on-grid solar systems are surely more beneficial from a general perspective, the benefit for you personally might differ based on your location and your power needs. Therefore, do consult your solar installer and figure out the type of solar system which will be best for you as per your unique power requirement.
