Because Diamonds Are Forever..
Diamonds are forever and so is a woman's
undying love for them. Women throughout
history have infamously been famous for their obsession with them.
Those who don’t own a diamond daydream
about owning one someday, while those who already own a few stones won’t
hesitate to express a healthy greed for even a modest collection. Let’s
understand the root of this obsession?
The Royal intervention:
Our History plays a very important role in
influencing us. The rulers who rule us leave their legacy behind. They become
our patrons and their way of living is something we look up to. It's no
different in the case of diamonds. We've read and seen how merchants used to
bring precious jewels from far off lands and how sometimes they've been
ordered. Maharani, Indira Devi, The Queen of Cooch Behar ordered 100 pairs of
shoes from Salvatore Ferragamo studded with diamonds to Queen Victoria, owning
the the Koh-i-noor. Today these precious stones are served in a more
contemporary style like the Pandora
jewellery.
The Hard to get game:
The painstaking effort that goes into
creating them and the length of time required to make them the ideal symbol.
The companies create an artificial demand by limiting the supply of new
diamonds, and the lack of supply boosts prices when they sell it, but not
necessarily when you sell it. All of this creates the appearance of a product
that is hard to obtain and not owned by many, but it's a fabrication.
The bigger the price, the bigger the prize:
Diamonds are precious which makes them
extremely valuable. The expense of a diamond is related to its size, the
brilliance of its colour, and the quality of its cut—the larger the diamond,
the more brilliant the colour, the better the cut, the more expensive the
diamond will be. And naturally, the more beautiful it will be.
The pop culture reference :
That image of Marilyn draped in the
glittery maze of diamonds with gentlemen in courtly attendance, and as captured
by the skilful hands of a cameraman is forever embedded in our collective
consciousness. The song, the woman, and the gemstone are icons. These reside in
our consciousness thus generating a wish for owning them.
Every girl at some point or the other has wanted a man to go down on his knees and take that magical black velvet box out of his pocket and present the coveted diamond ring. Diamonds are associated with love and its symbolic value is as high as its monetary one. With a change in the landscape, today many women prefer the more stylish Pandora rings.
