Be in Charming Places During Your Mykonos Holidays

by Daisy Wilkinson Travel Guides

A part of the Cyclades island group, Mykonos is a Greek island renowned for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful surroundings. The mythological traditions state that it was formed from the bodies of giants who were killed by Hercules. Mykonos enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year and has a typical Mediterranean climate. In the summer season, temperatures can rise to 40-Degree Celsius, but the average temperatures remain around 28-Degree Celsius owing to a cool wind called 'Meltemi'. During your time spent on this gorgeous Greek island, you'll get to visit some of its popular attractions.

One of the fascinating attractions you'd like to visit while enjoying your Mykonos holidays is the Little Venice quarter. Located near the Alexandra Beach, this neighbourhood was constructed by the sea merchants between the 16th and 17th centuries. While getting around in this part of the island, you'll witness some wonderful houses, restaurants, and cafes that have been built along the waterfront. Among the other marvels constructed by the Venetians in the 16th century is the Kato Mili or the 'lower windmills'. Located in the Chora town, these are a row of 16 windmills that have been capped with wood and straw. They give you some interesting insights into the process by which the Venetians harnessed wind power.

You can take a short trip to the island of Delos to delve a bit more into the world of Greek literature and architecture. It is the birthplace of the Greek mythological legends, Apollo and Artemis. While on the island, you can explore several ancient sites, such as Cleopatra's House and the Terrace of the Lions. Don't miss the Sacred Harbour, which is now a dry lake. From the town of Chora, you can get to the Platys Gialos Beach, which is a good place to relax under the warm sun. It is a family-friendly beach and is surrounded by many restaurants and hotels.

While holidaying on this Greek island, you can visit Panagia Paraportiani, which is one of the popular historic sites. The location of this site along the majestic coastline at the entrance of Kastro neighbourhood is extremely delightful. As you explore this site, you'll come across a seaside church that appears to be quite unusual owing to its unique construction. Built in the 14th century, this church appears as if 5 small churches were placed on top of each other. Owing to its rare architectural style, it has become one of the most photographed sites.

The village of Ano Mera is home to a 16th-century monastery called 'Panagia Tourliani'. This restored monastery is certainly worth exploring for its fabulous fountain and an excellent collection of Byzantine relics. During your visit to this monastery, you can also buy some attractive souvenirs from the shops nearby. If you're interested in exploring some more beaches, head to the Elia Beach by taking a bus from the Mykonos town or a boat from Platis Gialos. The presence of lesser crowds would give you the ideal environs to unwind after a busy sightseeing schedule.
