Autmotive Turbochargers – The Environment-Friendly Innovation in the Automotive Industry

by Basant K. Global Market Research Reports

Pollution caused by emission of toxic gas have been a front burner issue. Government across the world is legislating stringent laws and regulations to prevent environmental degradation which largely applies to the automotive industry. This has encouraged the manufacturers of automotive industry to develop a solution that protects the environment while enhancing fuel-saving capacity in an automotive.

Once a niche feature design, now a mainstream technology, automotive turbochargers are one such solution implemented by the automotive industry. They are high on performance and environment-friendly. They reduce the amount of carbon emissions by recirculating the exhausted gases in an engine to ensure that the fuel is utilized properly before venting it out in the atmosphere.

There has been a rise in the demand for manufacturing spacious cars by downsizing the engines and propellers. This demand is well recognized by the manufacturers of turbochargers which in turn has made the turbochargers that are compact in size and complements the performance of the engine. Their mainstream agenda is to increase the fuel economy in an automotive. Once the automotive are turbocharged, their fossil-fuel consumption decreases and it bodes well for the environment.

Working of a Turbocharger in an Automotive

Turbocharger comprises of 2 air fans – a compressor and a turbine that are held together on a metal shaft. This causes both air fans to spin together. The turbine is mounted in the exhaust passage of cylinders and the compressor is mounted in the air intake stream of an automotive. The cylinders attached to the turbine blow hot gas on the blades and it rotates along with the compressor. The compressor draws the cool air and drives it to the cylinders.

Automotive turbochargers being one of the most effective ways to ensure the fuel economy has been incorporated in the engines. This has caused a spur in the demand in the global automotive turbochargers market Furthermore, the downsizing of the engine has been one of the most lucrative factors for the growth of the automotive turbocharger market in the recent years.

The exhausted hot gases blow on the turbine and enhance its speed. This helps in ensuring the fuel efficiency of an automotive.

Types of Automotive Turbochargers

The vicinity of automotive is as multifaceted as the layouts of engines. Below are the different types of automotive turbochargers available in the market:

  • Single-turbo:

The world of single-turbo in itself is diverse. On differing the wheel size of compressor and turbine, the torque characteristics will differ. The large-sized turbines will provide better power capacity as compared to its small-sized counterparts, while the small-sized turbines spin faster which further reduces the overall size of an engine. Implementation of single turbos in an engine is a cost-effective way to enhance an engine’s power efficiency.

  • Twin-turbo:

Similar to single turbochargers, twin-turbochargers have multiple variations. In one case, two single turbochargers can be utilized for each of the cylinders to cut down the grunt. Additionally, there are parallel twin turbos, out of which one can be used at a low revolution per minute (RPM) and both of them can be used at a high RPM. Parallel twin turbos carry the same benefits as single-turbos. Moreover, it provides a low-end torque, thereby maintaining the power efficiency.

  • Twin-scroll Turbo:

Twin-scroll turbos provide a better efficiency in every aspect as compared to the single-scroll turbos. When two scroll turbos are utilized, the exhaust streams are divided. By leveraging twin-scroll turbo, more amount of energy is utilized to exhaust the turbine. This generates more power for the operation of an automotive. Depending on the types of scroll designs, multiple RPM range of effective boost becomes possible.

  • Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT):

Variable geometry turbochargers are extraordinary types of automotive turbochargers. They find their applications in diesel engine, owing to the rare materials required for its manufacturing and the high cost attached to it. VGT is designed in a way that it changes the area-to-radius (A/R) ratio to equal to that of the RPM. When the RPM is low, the low A/R ratio increases the velocity of the exhaust gas, which in turn increases the speed of the turbocharger. It generates a flat torque curve to drive the automotive at a uniform acceleration.

  • Electric Turbochargers:

The electric turbochargers find their applications in the modern-day automotive in order to meet the laws framed by the government. It generates a remarkable range of an engine’s operation even at a low RPM.  It is considered as an ideal turbocharger to reduce the size of the turbochargers and boost the overall efficiency of the engine by utilizing merely a single stage turbocharger. When an electric motor is connected to Exhaust turbine, the energy that is wasted can be retained.
