August's Super Blue Moon of 2023
by sitara Gull Muslims Holy TravelThe Super Blue Moon, a rare occurrence that promises to be
the largest and brightest Moon show of the year, will appear in the skies on
August 30, 2023.
According to In the Sky this Super Blue Moon of
August will rise on Wednesday from the easter horizon, just after the sunset at
7:10 p.m. EDT (2310 GMT).
But it is not necessary to be the biggest and brightest at
that time. The precise moment of a full moon is when it is 180 degrees away
from the sun and directly across from our star on Earth.
Since the 1940s, the phrase "Blue Moon" has been
used to refer to the second of two full moons that occur in a calendar month.
Since Wednesday's full moon is the second of August, it qualifies as a Blue Moon.
The Blue Moon occurs during a time when the moon comes closer
to the Earth as compared to usual days, making it appear almost imperceptibly
larger in the sky, just as August's first full moon, the Sturgeon Moon on
August 1.
A "Blue Moon" occurs when a full moon appears
twice in a month. This mysterious phenomenon is witnessed every two to three
years when a full moon appears at the beginning of the month and is only
followed by another at the end of the month.
The Super Blue Moon, despite its name, is not actually blue
in color. On rare occasions, tiny particles like dust and smoke scatter the red-light
wavelengths, giving the moon a misleading blue look.
During the closest approach of the Blue Moon toward Earth,
it looks 14% larger than usual appearance from a far distance. The moon's
increased brightness, which makes it look brighter than its typical radiance,
is a result of its proximity during this phase of its orbit.
This phenomenon can also be divided into monthly and
seasonal occurrences. The next Blue Moon, which will occur on August 31, 2023,
belongs to the monthly category.
