Asset tracking to aid oil-spill clean-up

by Manya Verma Health care and lifestyle

Crude Oil and Petroleum are major water pollutants causing widespread damage to marine life and beyond. Within the last few years there have been increasing mentions of accidental oil spills from both marine and terrestrial sources.

These instances are encouraging oil industries to redefine the way they have been performing off shore and on shore drilling and to allow best practices to be put into place. Since, the nature of these spills is accidental, a total prevention is difficult. Therefore, world-wide efforts are focussed on developing strategies to minimise these spills and assist clean-up as a sustainable solution to the global problem.

The recent initiative to introduce smart tags and asset tracking hardware in the operations is helping oil companies to respond faster and control the extent of damage. Since its use the imitative has also helped in controlling losses by streamlining equipment tracking, employee downtime and material usage.

The asset tracking software deploys a web of networks and sensors across the primary field and associated assets. These support the spill responders by providing precise information on location and equipment. This is an extended use of sensing technologies currently used commercially across different sectors such as RFID, GPS by customizing them for use around oil, gas and harsh conditions.

Performing routine refinery maintenance is key to avoiding accidents along with stress tests performed to assess accuracy and tracking through documentation. Asset management tracking system help in this process by providing better documentation of work orders and supports easy tracking for engineers using RFID transmitters.

This is allowing oil companies to respond quickly to oil spills and better assess the situation as new equipment allow rigs to communicate with plans and ships more freely and coordinate in case of spill.

Since, maintenance practices are more effective when coupled with a robust management system, using CMMS can help in planning and scheduling processes with accurate tracking. A computer maintenance management system helps in recording history of all assets and schedules future training and servicing.

Through IT enables maintenance and prevention practices, oil companies can reduce the risk of oil spillage and control the extent of damage to marine life and coastline.

Using an Asset management software, for accurate and efficient monitoring and maintenance of equipment, is an instrumental effort in ensuring that the right assets are ready for deployment whenever an oil spill occurs.
