Aspirin Toxicity In Pet And Their Effective Mitigation

by Ransi Plick Website Owner

With the innumerable troubles ready to engulf the body of dogs, you would be required to follow proper pet grooming tips and take the assistance of an expert vet for your pet’s care. If the trouble is found substantial, vets offer a variety of medications to cure the disordered conditions. Among these medications, aspirins are one of the common medicines that vets offer to the pets for killing the pain and for the anti-clotting action in the body. These are the same medicines that even human beings are offered by their doctors for the stipulated needs.

Though these medicines are effective in their action, there are innumerable cases reported, of the pets that acquire poisoning in their body due to the action of aspirins. When they are not provided in appropriate dosage, aspirins could be life-threatening and even lead to death of small or young dogs.

Symptoms of Aspirin Poisoning:

With the inappropriate dosage of aspirins, you could view the following symptoms in the body of your pets:

·         Various disorders relating to digestive system of the pets, including vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, intestinal degradation, ineffective bowel movements and irregularity of urine

·         Circulatory system troubles such as ineffective flow of blood and impaired blood clotting etc.

·         Urinary system troubles such as kidney stones and complete failure of kidneys etc.

·         Mental troubles such as seizures, depression, anxiety, lethargy, sleepiness and lack of coordination while walking

·         Other miscellaneous behavioral troubles such as loss of appetite, pale gums, lighter urine, thirst of extreme range, bleeding of gums, bleeding from other parts of the body, tarry stools and depressed state of mind.

While You Suspect Aspirin Poisoning:

While you view symptoms that are mentioned above and suspect their occurrence due to aspirin poisoning, it is better to consult a vet soon, rather than trying to treat your pet at home. Aspirin poisoning could be a fatal condition that affects innumerable inner and outer parts of the body. Due to this, any form of delay in treatment of your pets could be lethal in terms of its life.

While you visit your vet for such a case, you need to offer them proper details of the conditions, including the dosage of the medicine, living conditions of your pets, diet of your pets and time-period of occurrence of such symptoms.

Depending upon this, the vets would suggest various tests such as blood tests, urinalysis, X-Ray, ECG and Ultrasound etc. to determine the exact state of their body. These tests would be helpful in offering your pet the most appropriate treatment according to the extent of damage done by the medications. Some pets could be required to be admitted in the hospitals, with doses of IV fluids and medications at proper intervals to relieve the body conditions. Others may just get well with the other proper medications which alleviate the symptoms with time.

Aspirin Dosage And Its Frequency:

As per the recommendation of doctors, aspirin dosage for dogs is about 5 to 10 mg per pound weight of your pet. And this is provided only once in a 12 hours duration. The weight of a tablet of aspirin ranges from 320 mg to 80 mg. Your vet would suggest the lowest possible strength of aspirin, depending upon the condition of the dog. Providing more than the stipulated amount could always cause harms to the body of your pet. Never purchase the coated aspirins for your pets, as pets are unable to digest the coated ones. Also, do not provide any amount of aspirins to the puppies as these could always be harmful for the younger aged pets.

Prevention:

Prevention is always better than cure and so applies for your pet. Even when you do not offer these medicines to your dog, but keep them at home for your own use, it is better to keep them safe and out of reach of your pets. Your pet is natural detective and may discover these to consume them without your knowledge, if kept at a reachable place. Therefore, always keep all the medicines out of the reach of your pet and always offer them only upon the advice of your vet, for a safe and secure overall health.
