Are you an Engineer and would like to migrate to Australia?

Experienced Engineers who are interested to migrate to Australia may be eligible under the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) (Points-tested) stream. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident and apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible. You can also include your partner and your or your partner’s child or step-child in your application.

The followingEngineering occupations are included in the list of eligible skilled occupations:

·         Chemical Engineer

·         Civil Engineer

·         Computer Network and Systems Engineer

·         Electrical Engineer

·         Electronics Engineer

·         Engineering Manager

·         Engineering Technologist

·         Environmental Engineer

·         Industrial Engineer

·         Mechanical Engineer

·         Production or Plant Engineer

·         Structural Engineer

·         Telecommunications Engineer

·         Transport Engineer

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for the visa, you must:

·         Have a relevant occupation listed above or on the list of eligible skilled occupations

 

·         Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation

o   You need to contact Engineers Australia to obtain a skills assessment that shows that you have the skills and qualifications to work in your nominated occupation. In almost all cases, you will need to have university or trade qualifications in order to receive a positive assessment of your skills.

 

·         Meet the points test pass mark of 65 points

o   You can use the points table to calculate your score

o   Achieving 65 points does not guarantee that you will be invited. You will be ranked against other intending applicants and generally, applicants with a higher score will be invited to apply for the visa first.

·         Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation

 

·         Have competent English

o   You must have achieved a score of at least 6 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in an International English Language Testing System (IELTS). There are also other acceptable English proficiency tests that you can sit for. The test must be undertaken in the 3 years immediately prior to lodging the visa application.

 

·         Meet the health requirement

o   To meet this requirement, you will be requested to go for a health check.

 

·         Be of good character

o   To meet this requirement, you will need to provide police certificates from countries that you have lived in. You may also need to provide additional documents.

 

·         Be invited by the Department of Home Affairs to apply

 

Application process

1.       Check to confirm that your occupation is on the list of eligible skilled occupations, you have achieved 65 points, and you meet all the above eligibility criteria. You also need to have the results of your skills assessment from Engineers Australia before you can submit an EOI.

 

2.       Submit an expression of interest (EOI)

·         Submit the EOI through SkillSelect with details of your nominated occupation, skills and qualifications. SkillSelect will estimate a points score and rank you against other intending migrants.

 

3.       Wait for the invitation to apply for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) (Points-tested) stream

·         You could receive an invitation any time within 2 years of submitting your EOI

 

4.       Gather your documents

 

5.       Apply for the visa within 60 days of invitation

·         You will receive an invitation to apply for the visa if there are places available for your nominated occupation and you rank high enough in your points score

·         You must provide documents that prove all of the claims you make in your EOI

·         You must provide documents that support other eligibility criteria for the visa

POINTS TEST

The points test is used to help Australia to select people who have the skills and attributes it needs. You can be given points for a number of reasons, including your:

·         Skills

·         Age

·         English language ability

·         Occupation

·         Work experience

·         Qualifications

You can use the points table to calculate your score

 CASE STUDY 1

You are a mechanical engineer and your occupation is listed on the list of eligible skilled occupations. You are between 25 to 32 years old(30 points), have proficient English (which is defined as being able to achieve a score of at least 7 in the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(10 points).You have worked as amechanicalengineer between 5 to 7 years outside of Australia (10 points). You have a Bachelor degree from an Australian educational institution or a Bachelor qualification, from another educational institution that is of a recognised standard (15 points).

Based on the points table, you will have achieve 65 points, which will allow you to submit an expression of interest (EOI). If you have a partner and child, you can also include them in your visa application. 

 CASE STUDY 2

You are a civil engineer and your occupation is listed on the list of eligible skilled occupations. You are between 25 to 32 years old (30 points), have superior English (which is defined as being able to achieve a score of at least 8 in the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (20 points). You have worked as a civil engineer between 3 to 4 years outside of Australia (5 points). You have a Bachelor degree from an Australian educational institution or a Bachelor qualification, from another educational institution that is of a recognised standard (15 points).

Based on the points table, you will have achieve 70 points, which will allow you to submit an expression of interest (EOI). As you will be ranked against other intending applicants, the higher your score, the better your chances of receiving an invitation.
