Are Conventional School Rules Outdated?

by Chloe C. Influencer

Every educational organization, be it a school, college or university has a certain set of rules to operate smoothly. The teacher, students, and all other staff members are obliged to follow them. Some conventional rules are still practiced in many institutions which are quite outdated and need to be updated to meet the requirements of the present day. These rules are guidelines usually related to class discipline staff management that are used to evaluate what is wrong or right. They are used to preserve the moral value and reputation of an educational institution.

Types of School Rules:

There are typically 5 types of rules that are observed in school as well as in every educational institution;

  • Relational Rules

  • Structuring Rules

  • Protecting Rules

  • Personal Rules

  • Etiquette Rules

Relational Rules:

Relational rules are the rules that explain how to behave in a certain way with another person. These rules work to ensure the protection and security of individuals in terms of physical or psychological harm. Some Relational rules serve as a guideline to behave prosocially and avoid anti-social activities.

Structuring Rules:

The rule provides a plan of action or structure about the activities that need to take place in a school, followed by a proper timeline. The rules also include a proper guideline regarding the physical properties i.e where those activities will take place.

Protecting Rules:

The primary focus of these rules is ensuring the health and safety of the individuals. This category comprises certain prohibitions of harming oneself or exposing oneself or others to risks of accident.

Personal Rules:

Personal Rules usually cater to an individual's activities that ensure that a person takes the responsibility for their actions and deeds, be it verbal or physical.

Etiquette Rules:

These rules promote the idea of mannerism i.e how to behave in a social setting. They are an extensive form of relational rules which cover the individual interest on higher grounds.

To understand the traditional rules it is equally important to have a close look at Conventional and Modern systems as well.

Conventional Rules Vs Modern Rules:

With the advancement in culture and technology, the conventional rules are being outdated and there is a dire need to update these rules with modern ones to work under the changing demands of a digital era.

The main difference between these rules is that conventional rules are applicable for online tuition but on the other hand, traditional rules tend to apply in traditional school settings and are still valid in such settings.

Conventional rules are more flexible as in traditional rules there is a fixed protocol and timing for the class since in modern rules the learners can learn in flexible timing.

In conventional rules which are applicable in online settings involves heterogeneous groups of people with different ages, race, and cultures while traditional rules apply on homogeneous groups of people in which there are the people of the same age group.

Traditional education is considered more costly as it requires books, fees, classroom material, and a setup while in the conventional setup there is no such need as relevant study material is available online as making it more cost-effective.

Conventional rules allow a student to study multiple courses at the same time while acquiring maximum certificates at the same time but according to traditional rules you can opt for one course at a time.

Traditional rules for schools allow the exams to occur once in a while i.e after a term or semester and the tests are evaluated manually. While the modern rules allow assessment after each topic/chapter and results are generated automatically which is more accurate and fast.

Modern education methods allow access to unlimited information and material while on the other end traditional methods provide limited study material.

Conclusion:

While every System has its own rules as well its pros and cons, the traditional system and rules are somehow outdated but are still applicable in traditional educational institutes and organizations. However, the modern system and rules are more aligned with the system of online educational facilities. A Lot of people opt Modern educational system to meet the requirements of the fast-paced world. The essence of traditional rules are somehow lost but is still present and applicable in traditional organizations. It is crucial to give importance to both of this system as each of them have its significance.

Modern education and rules are inherited from traditional education. But due to modern education, traditional education is being neglected which would result in losing our culture. Traditional education and modern education, both should be given equal importance.
