First of all, there is the basic hanging heater. Hanging heaters are found in the vast majority of fish tanks because are affordable and efficient. They are mainly used for freshwater fish. These heaters basically hang on the edge of the tank. Correct installation is important for hanging heaters. Make sure they are placed securely near the back of the tank. If they are broken, it is possible that your fish could be killed through its electricity. Hanging heaters are not recommended for saltwater tanks.
You might also stumble upon in-filter aquarium heaters. These types of heaters work simultaneously with power filters. Basically as water passes through the filter it is warmed up. A very useful heater if you don’t want to use a lot of space.
Next, be sure to check out submersible heaters. These are also rather common in most household aquariums. Submersible aquarium heaters are actually in the water of your aquarium, water doesn’t damage them. They can be placed in a variety of different positions but they usually work best if they placed deep in your tank. This allows the thermostat to calculate the right temperature and adjust accordingly.
Have tons of plants in your aquarium? If so, you might want to take a look at substrate heaters. Though not common they work well if you love plants and have a lot of them in your aquarium. Basically, substrate heaters have a piece of wire which is placed deep into your gravel that lines the bottom of the aquarium. The substrate heater heats the wire. The heater is then transfers to the gravel which heaters the rest of the tank. Since these heaters start from the bottom of your tank they can easily heat up the plants’ roots to keep them healthy and warm.
Don’t forget that heaters are especially important for tropical fish. Heaters are only required for select fish. If you don’t want to spend money on a heater or just want a simple tank there are plenty of fish that like room temperature water.
Other types of heaters include in-line heaters and in-sump heaters.
