Before sending the documents to MEA, they have to go through certain departments. The way to get an apostille depends on where you are going and how much time you have.
There are basically two main ways to get an apostille.

1) Say authentication, then MEA apostille
2) Subdivisional magistrate verification, then MEA apostille

Verification by the state
In this type of authentication, the HRD department or the home ministry department will first attest the documents (birth, marriage..)
For state authentication, it takes more time because it involves many government departments.
The government has set up regional authentication centres where you can only get a state ID. Even if the documents are from a different city, you only need to go to these centres. Because of this, getting state authentication takes a long time.

The SDM Authentication, on the other hand, is a faster way to get an apostille. Here, SDM will authenticate your documents for an apostille instead of the state government.

Which is Better? Authentication by State or SDM
That depends on the country you are going to and how much time you have to get the document apostilled.
It is better to use SDM authentication if you are travelling to any of the Hague nations except Italy and Austria. State authentication is needed for Italy and Austria.
If you're going to a country that isn't on the Hague list, it's best to get a state authorization.
If you have a lot of time and money and your documents are from the Regional Authentication Centers, it is better to do state authentication.

How long does the apostille last?
All apostilles from the State or SDM will be valid for 6 months. If the apostille is older than 6 months, it needs to be re-apostilled.
