An Introduction to light Fixture

A device consisting of a light bulb, socket or wiring that is used to create artificial light is called as light fixture in US English or light fitting in UK English or many times also called as luminaries for technical use.

There are two basic classes of light fixtures used globally. These are fixed light fixtures and special purpose lights. Fixed ones are those which are stationary and cannot be moved once it is installed at one place. Common examples of this type of fixtures are light bulbs in home, street lights, lights used in industries, factories or mines. These lights cannot be moved to other places once they are fixed. If you want them to be moved to other location, you need to remove all the cables and reinstall it in new place.
Special purpose lights are those which are designed to use for specific purposes. For example, background light is used in video production, Christmas lights are used to light decoration and Christmas tree, stage lights are used to decorate stage for performances etc. These lights are designed for special purposes and can only be used for those purposes or in some cases, for relatively similar purposes.

Modern day classification of light fixtures is based on various factors. This can include classification based on location, design, use, power supply etc. However, for convenience, people prefer to categorize light fixtures based on domestic use and industrial use.

Some light fixtures are built considering safety and durability. These are mostly used in industrial places like factories, manufacturing plants, open and closed mines etc. These fixtures are made to give you more light like flood lights and are build to last long and to keep you safe from hazards like fire, smoke, electrical shot circuit. For these types of light safety and functionality is primary factor while they are been manufactured.

It is easy to know type of fixture you need based on this classification of use. For example, when you want to buy domestic light fixtures, you can look for fixtures you need to install inside the house or outside the house. These are called as internal light fixtures or exterior light fixtures, depending on the need.

Since there is a wide range of selection to select from, it is important to understand the purpose of the light before you buy it. It is also equally important to consider the location of the light fixture before you buy one. This includes locations like porch, garden, hall, playrooms, closets, bathrooms etc. Decorative fixtures may also help to decorate lights at places like hallway or living room or stairs.
