Although everybody must be quite familiar with the term scoliosis, not everybody is knowledgeable about what kind of a disease this is and what treatments are available. Scoliosis is a widespread spinal disorder seen in both adults and children. In fact, it is a term taken from the Greek language implying curvature. This ailment is normally more prevalent in girls than in boys.

Typically one of the main irregularities of scoliosis is the unusual curve of more than 10 degrees of the spine. Generally this disease begins between 10 and 15 years.  It is believed to be hereditary. It can also be congenital infantile scoliosis.

Causes of this ailment are not known, though it is mostly discerned at the onset of or at some stage in adolescence during a spurt of growth.

Some of the risks that could probably worsen the spinal curve are:
•    If Scoliosis precipitates at a younger age, chances of it becoming worse are more
•    The more the curvature of the spine the more likely that it will become worse
•    The site of the curve, meaning that if the curve is in the middle or in the lower spine rather than in the upper spine progress of scoliosis is more imminent
•    Scoliosis at birth may progress faster as it is considered a defect of the spinal cord

Scoliosis can be easily detected. Mentioned below are some common indications.
•    In scoliosis there is a marked difference in the height of the shoulders
•    Even the rib cages are of varying heights
•    One of the shoulder blades are more pronounced than the other
•    The hip also appears raised
•    The spinal curve can be seen either in the lower or upper spine or at both locations and the bend can be to the right or left
•    The whole body could lean to one of the sides.

There are three varieties of scoliosis that can affect kids. They are infantile, juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Infantile idiopathic scoliosis crops up before the child is three years. Though many such cases get resolved of their own accord, there are cases that develop into very serious deformities which call for infantile scoliosis treatment.

In the second type, that can be found more often in girls between 3 and ten years of age, the scoliosis progresses faster and may need the intervention of surgery to get corrected.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis or simply Adolescent Scoliosis generally starts off around ten years of age. By and large treatment for any type of scoliosis is decided by the child’s age, the potential for balance growth, progression rate, the pattern and degree of the spinal curvature, and the manner in which it is manifested.
