An Engagement Photoshoot's Importance

by Austin Baines Content Writer

For many people, keeping their wedding day memories comes in second to actually making them. And having a photographer who actually understands and cares about you results in real, meaningful memories. You don't want the stress of not knowing what to anticipate from your photographer on your wedding day, or the concern of not knowing how to "act" in front of the camera. You need someone who has taken the time to get to know you as a couple, and I believe that is where an engagement photoshoot excels. This session, in my opinion, should be easy-going and reflect your personality. It should mean something special to you both as a pair.

The session has two purposes for me. To begin, you should learn about your photographer and how they work. Second, and perhaps most crucially, the photographer is able to assist you in relaxing in front of the camera and allowing you to simply be yourself.

I enjoy photographing individuals in well-lit environments and then stepping back to allow them to express themselves and the love they share. Occasionally, I provide early direction, and I frequently provide some props at the start of the session. Again, just to provide a laid-back vibe, but the pair is free to be themselves. The days of traditional, structured posing for these sessions are long gone.

My couples sometimes use this session to have a practice run with the bride's hair and makeup professionals, and then review the photographs to see if it's the style they wanted. It’s a great way to see if the haircut will stay in place two hours later and for the bride to double-check that her makeup is exactly how she wants it.

Occasionally, the session is used solely to allow the couple to enjoy a favorite location. This could be a place where they have fond recollections. It may be at the beach at dusk, in a park full of Spring growth, in the city with the hustle and bustle of crowds and cafes or basically just at home. Some couples choose to include children, dogs, or other family members who are unable to attend due to age or disease. Even so, I always make sure that the pair has some time to themselves.

Fun, semi-photojournalistic, and even "set created" engagement photoshoots have become increasingly popular in recent years. The crucial thing to remember is that, while there is a quirky element to these photographs, it is the photographers' use of lighting, composition, and post-production techniques that elevate them to the professional level, where they truly become something to appreciate for a lifetime.

As a photographer, I prefer to use the engagement session as a time to share what I've learned over the years with my couples. I give them advice on how to pose, kiss, and stroll in a way that flatters them and is easy to recall on the big day. There are no long explanations, simply simple instructions that flow naturally once you know how.

Knowing how to stand in the most flattering way as a bride is crucial. I educate them about simple, comfortable postures that both the bride and husband can attain, which makes the wedding day a lot less stressful. A big thing for me is to give some tips on ‘kissing for the camera’ so the couple don’t end up with squashed noses and I encourage them to practice which I am regularly told later was ‘fun homework

It always establishes a connection between us as we practice the things I share, and it shows my couples that I care about them and honestly want them to feel comfortable with me.

An Engagement Shoot, in my opinion, is highly vital, and perhaps more important than you realize during your wedding planning. Following the steps will ensure that the photographs taken on your wedding day best portray both of you as a couple and your love for one another. If you've had a good time and are calm after the engagement shoot, if you've already been given permission to be yourself in front of the camera, I'm confident you'll have all the skills you need to enjoy your wedding day to the fullest and leave with the best memories.
