The molten metal is poured from the top. The die is so designed that the metal flows quickly and turbulently into every part of the die. The die is often heated so that there is premature solidification and the metals have a very high melting point. The die has to be cooled artificially after each casting.
In China, the methods of slush casting are used along with hollow castings. The molten metal is poured into the die and the solid shell is formed. This has sufficient thickness while the rest of the liquid is poured out. The die castings are cheaper than the sand castings and the tooling is more expensive. There are an optimum number of castings that are required for the process to be effective. There are microprocessors available that help in steady castings.
