All You Need to Know About Fertility Drugs

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

If a couple is diagnosed with an infertility issue, the first thing that a doctor can recommend is medications. Fertility Drugs help to stimulate your reproductive hormones, increase ovulation in women, and raise sperm count in men. A doctor prescribes these fertility drugs based on the type of infertility, cause of infertility, medical history of the patient, and age of the patient.

Fertility drugs may also be given in the on-going infertility treatments such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) or IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) to increase chances to conceive. These drugs can be given either through injection or by the oral method.

Requirements of Fertility Drugs

Sometimes, infertility can not only be cured through some natural process such as a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle, exercising, or being relaxed. In some cases, medical assistance in terms of medication or treatment is required. Fertility drugs are given in the following cases.

  • When there is a requirement of triggering ovulation and ovulation induction to produce mature egg.
  • When patient suffers from the irregular menstrual cycle.
  • When infertility is caused by any other medical condition such as PCOS and hormonal imbalance.
  • When hormonal stimulation required at any stage of infertility treatment such as IVF or IUI.

Condition when Fertility Drugs are Inefficient

Fertility drugs do not work in each infertility issue. If the infertility is caused by any physical damage such as uterus abnormalities, fallopian tube blockage in women, and ejaculatory duct blockage in men. In such cases, surgery is required to rectify the issue. If you are suffering from any physical difficulties in conceiving, contact SCI IVF HOSPITAL - Fertility Centre in Delhi.

Primary Fertility Drugs

The following fertility drugs can help to cure infertility in women.

1.       Orally Consumable: The following drugs can be taken orally.

  • Clomid: Clomid is a widely used drug to cure infertility problems in women. It is also known as Clomiphene citrate and is orally consumable. It is used to treat ovulation dysfunction. It helps to release hormones such as Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH), thus triggers ovulation. Women suffering from PCOS are advised to take this drug.
  • Letrozol (Femara): It is suggested to take this drug early stage of treatment or before pregnancy. It helps to solve issues related to ovulation. This drug primarily used to treat breast cancer.

2.     Hormone Injection: If there are any deficiency of sexual hormones arousing, it is injected into the human body for fertility.

  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG): This hormone is naturally produced by the human body. It triggers the ovary to produce a mature egg. If the body cannot produce it, an injection is given.
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH):Gonadotropins or follicular drugs help the ovaries to produce dominant follicles for each treatment cycle of IUIor IVF treatments. It ensures the growth of the egg during the treatment.
  • Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (hMG): This drug helps in controlled ovarian stimulation. It is anamalgamation of FSH and LH hormones injected in the body to trigger the ovary to release the egg. This drug avoids pre-mature ovulation and helps to mature eggs properly.

Side Effects of Fertility Drugs

Fertility drugs are subjected to some sideeffects as well. Thoughsideeffects are temporary and nominal, one should still prepare for them.

·         These drugs may cause nausea, swelling, headache, moodswings, and breast soreness.

·         Fertility drugs artificially enhance ovaries to produce more eggs. If more than one mature egg is produced and fertilised, it may cause multiple births (twins or triplet).

·         Over stimulation of ovaries may cause ovarian enlargement and fluid imbalance.

However, side-effects can be marginalized, if the medication for fertility is taken under the guidance of experienced doctors as in SCI IVF HOSPITAL – Best infertility clinic in Delhi NCR.
