To desiccate is to dehydrate or dry something. Desiccants are thus the substances which can be used to desiccate. Desiccants widely find their usage in applications where there is the need of absorbing moisture or vapor from substances and or circuits.

Due to the moisture adsorbing nature, desiccants generally are available in the form of powders or granular structure. This unique structure exposes a larger surface area and thus adds to the property of adsorbing large moisture contents. Desiccants however cannot be used in their raw form. Absorption comes into role when one substance becomes the integral part of former, and adsorption is a process linked with the formation of bonds between two ingredients. However, desiccants follow a totally different scientific approach and absorb moisture towards them. This is the reason they are often referred to as water attractor.

Desiccants find their major use as a preservative where moisture would lead to damage and contamination otherwise. To protect objects, substances and or appliances from any such harmful effect of moisture, a certain amount of particular desiccant is added to the packaging. Some of the many applications include artwork, meals, shipping goods, medical and pharmaceutical products, equipment, gadgets and appliances, leather based items and so on.

There are various types of desiccants available with us today. Indicating desiccants are one of them which tend to change their color when any absorbing or adsorbing activity is triggered by them. The selection of desiccant should be undertaken keeping various things in mind, the utility of package is one such factor. The substances from which desiccant is fabricated is also another essential factor. Further, indicating silica gel should not be used with consumable goods. Indicating silica gel consists of toxic substances and may prove harmful for health. Thus, having a proper knowledge prior to desiccant selection is necessary.
