Palace on Wheels is not something new that needs an introduction. The train has been a part of the luxury train list of India for several years and has attracted numerous international tourists to take a trip to India. Here are a few interesting and important facts that one need to learn about the train and the journey.

Facts About the Train

a) Palace on Wheels is the first luxury train ever to run in India.

b) The train is on the tracks since 1982. It was originally operated by Rajasthan Tourism development Corporation and now is under the control of Indian Railways.

c) The train was redesigned in 2009 with all modern facilities. In 2010, it was voted as the fourth best luxury train in the world.

d) The train has re-used the saloons used by the kings of India and the British viceroys before independence. Each saloon gets its name from the princely state from which it was collected from.

e) Since 2010, it has been in the list of top ten luxury trains in the world.

f) The Palace on Wheels has a separate platform reserved in the railway station which enables the tourists to park their vehicle right next to their cabin for easy loading.

g) The speed of the train is very slow than any normal train in the country. This enables the tourists to enjoy the facilities inside the train with ease.

h) The train can be booked as a whole for marriages or birthday parties.

i) The train was initially a traditional steam engine.

a) There are 23 coaches, 14 saloons for tourists, spa and two restaurants in the train.

b) There is a library, pantry and many interesting facilities inside the Palace on Wheels train.

c) The train has special panoramic windows to get a good view of the sceneries.

d) A butler is assigned for every room to cater the tourists throughout the day.

e) Anyone who is above the age of 18 can drink in the train while smoking is completely prohibited inside the train.

f) Numerous dietary options can be chosen during booking. This includes gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan and others.

g) The whole train is air-conditioned and has Wi-Fi facility.

h) Spa inside the train includes exotic therapies like stone therapy, Ayurvedic therapy, Thai massage Orient signature therapy and others.

Facts about the trip

a) All trips starts on a Wednesday and ends on a Wednesday. The train takes just 4 trips a month.

b) The train does not run from May to August. The months of April and September are considered as lean and have low cost compared to other months.

c) The train offers only one itinerary that stretches for seven nights and eight days.

d) The train stops at a different destination on each day allowing tourists to visit seven different destinations during the travel.

Miscellaneous facts

a) Wheel chairs and other options will be provided to assist physically challenged tourists. The requirement should be however mentioned during Palace on wheels booking.

b) Fresh ingredients are stocked during each stop and local delicacies of the destination would be served in the restaurants.

c) During its 34 years of journey, the train trip was cancelled only once in 2016 due to lack of tourists.
