An overhead crane is also known as bridge crane. It is a type of crane used particularly in industries for manufacturing and maintenance applications, where downtime or efficiency is the main factors. It comprises of parallel runways with a traveling bridge spanning the gap.

Types

Depending upon the nature of work, these cranes are manufactured in a number of configurations. There are two types of overhead cranes available now-a-days:

EOT (Electric Overhead Crane) Crane

This is one of the most common types of crane used in industries. As the name suggests, these are electrically operated by a control pendant, radio/IR remote pendant, or from the operator cabin. This cabin is attached within the crane itself.

Rotary Overhead Crane

Rotary overhead crane has one end of the bridge mounted on a fixed pivot; while the other end is carried on an annual track.

Advantages

•  Bridge cranes can move to the places where no other crane can reach. So, there   is no need to clear aisles.
•  It has better space so that operator can stand there safely.
•  It is customizable and adaptable
•  Overhead cranes can easily handle heavier loads.
•  The cranes have inexpensive operating cost.
•  Bridge cranes are ergonomically friendly.
•  Helps in increasing productivity.

Disadvantages

•  This crane can only be handled by well trained operators.
•  These operators require high amount of salary.
•  A lot of space and proper environment is needed for its storage while not in use.

Applications

•  These are commonly used in the refinement of steels and metals like aluminum and copper.
•  It is used in automobile industries for handling of raw material.
•  In manufacturing units, overhead cranes are used to shift raw material from one department to the other until the production of final product.
•  Almost every paper mill use overhead cranes at initial construction of paper machines.

Maintenance

•  Maintenance is another important factor of every machine including bridge crane. Complete inspection of the machine is necessary every time you think of using it. All its parts should run smoothly.
•  Also check for some hanging or loose ends. It is because even a minor carelessness can cause any serious injury.
•  Check for the abnormal sounds and movement of hoist when you start the crane. Also go for a regular servicing to ensure smooth operation of the crane.

Safety

Like hydraulic telescopic cranes, operating overhead cranes also require an operator to be aware of all the safety guidelines. These are:

•  Wear head protective and personal protective gear when operating overhead cranes.
•  Turn off the crane while not in use.
•  Clear out the area where the crane has to operate. In other words, ensure clear line of visibility all around before moving the load. Never allow anybody to ride the load or hook.
•  Allow only the professionals to operate the crane.
•  Never cross the lifting capacity of your overhead crane. Test for a balance by lifting the load up to few inches off the ground before moving the load.

These modern cranes are so well manufactured that they will lasts for decades if maintained properly and serviced regularly. If you are also involved in a construction business or any other which requires use of cranes then you can buy overhead cranes. You can also take crane on hire if you use the cranes often. There are many manufacturers who offer their cranes on hire. Go for it and have a lot of benefits.
