All About Ford Edge Evolution

The Ford Edge is a crossover SUV produced in 2006 for the 2007 model year. Its name comes from a Ford Ranger trim package and is a family-focused crossover SUV (CUV) with five doors and five comfortable seats.

First Generation

The first generation Ford Edge was released in 2006 and was available in four trims which are; SE, SEL, Limited (SEL Plus), and Sport. The exterior was bold at the time with the front fascia consisting of a grille with three chrome slats and odd-shaped headlights. A high beltline and small windows on the side and dual exhausts at the rear.

The inside offers a nice and neat dashboard with an instrument panel consisting of two large and two small meter instruments for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and coolant temperature. The center console has an infotainment unit, two air vents, and climate controls knobs. The Edge has two seating rows that can accommodate five adults and the cargo space is large with a low load floor. 

The 2007 Edge came fitted with a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with 256 hp mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission only.

2010 Update

The Ford Edge received a mid-life upgrade on 2010 with changes including a new F150-inspired grille, the new 22” light-alloy wheels, and the Sport trim comes fitted with a black grille and smoked headlights. The interior was also upgraded with a redesigned dashboard and a new instrument cluster flanked by two 4.2-inch MyFord Touch LCD car information displays, and the 8.0-inch infotainment touch-screen.

The Edge received two new engines, the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct injection with 240 hp, the 3.7-liter V6 petrol with 305 hp, and the 3.5-liter V6 with 276 hp.

Second Generation

Ford unveiled the second-generation Edge in 2014 and is available in five trim levels which are; SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and ST. The 2015 Ford Edge was redesigned with a new trapezoidal Explorer-like grille and new headlights. A new stoplight with a thin strip and a spoiler for improved aerodynamics is fitted atop the power liftgate and twin exhaust pipes.

The interior offers smooth plastics on the dash, instrument cluster, small information LCD screen, and comfortable cloth upholstery as standard. The power driver’s seat and dual-zone automatic climate control come with high-end trims.

The 2015 Edge had several engine options, the twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol as standard, twin-turbo direct-injection 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 petrol, 3.5-liter unit, an optional turbocharged 2.0-liter TDCI diesel engine with 210 hp. These engines are mated to either a 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual, or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2018 Update

The Edge received a mid-life refresh in 2018 with a touch of luxury to rival other luxury cars, a quiet cabin with steady ride and agile handling as well as an easy-to-use Sync 3 infotainment system.

Standard features include air-conditioning, a rear-view camera, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass, automatic headlights, and 18-inch alloys. The SEL model comes with power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, heated side mirrors, and LED headlight stripes. The premium Titanium trim has insulated front windows, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, front sport seats, ambient interior lighting, and 19-inch wheels.

The 2019 Edge has a twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 250 hp and the uprated version of the twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 produces 335 hp and can accelerate to 100kph in less than 6.0 seconds. 

2021 Update

The Edge received another update in 2021 which included the introduction of Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a conversational voice recognition system. The 2021 model comes with the twin-turbo 2.0-liter engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
