All About Blepharoplasty
by Toby B. Jackson How to Prepare Your RV for StorageIf
you are tired of looking in the mirror and seeing a reflection that
just looks tired and worn out, you may be thinking about undergoing
surgical procedures that will enhance your looks and replace the
radiance and youthfulness that you once had years ago. If your eyes
are the cause of your tired and worn out look, a blepharoplasty may
be in your best interest.
What is a Blepharoplasty?
If
your eyes appear to be sagging and have drooping skin, then a
blepharoplasty will help to remedy your problem. This type of surgery
specializes in the repair of the drooping skin around your eyelids by
removing excess skin, fat and muscle that naturally collects in the
area over time. As you can imagine, the collection of this excess
skin, muscle and fat leads to eyes that look tired, worn out and old.
Why does this happen? As you grow older, your eyelids start to
stretch. This is a result of gravity, and happens to the rest of your
body, as well. As the skin around the eyelids stretches, it becomes
weak and can no longer support the muscle and fat that have collected
in the area. The result of this is the look of bulging skin that
gathers above and below the eyelids, which leaves you looking tired,
run down and old. Not only can this sagging skin have a negative
impact on the way you look, but it can also be detrimental to your
vision. That sagging skin can block the sides of your eyes, causing
you to lose your peripheral vision.
How is Blepharoplasty
Done?
This surgery is usually performed on an outpatient
basis. That is, you will receive the surgery and leave for home right
after. There is usually no need to expect to have to stay in the
hospital, unless, of course, complications do occur. During the
surgery, the surgeon will cut a slit along the fold of your upper
eyelid. Through this incision, the surgeon will remove the excess
skin, fat and muscle that are causing your eyelid to sag. Once the
top lid is repaired, he will then work on the lower lid. Again, an
incision will be made in the lower lid. This incision will be made
just below the lashes of your lower lids natural crease. And, once
again, the buildup of extra skin, fat and muscle is removed through
this incision. Once the excess muscle, fat and skin is removed from
each lid, the incision is closed with stitches and all but a tiny,
nearly invisible scar remains. The entire process takes about two
hours to complete. Once your surgery is completed, you will be
transported to a recovery area in the hospital, where you will stay
until you regain consciousness from the anesthesia and until you are
assessed to determine the state of your health and well being.
What
is the Healing Process Like?
In order to help your eyes
heal, an ointment will be applied to your lids. This ointment helps
to keep the incisions lubricated so that they do not dry out or
become infected. While the ointment itself does not hurt, it can
cause blurred vision. Additionally, you may experience a profound
amount of tearing in your eyes, as well as double vision and light
sensitivity. Some pain should be expected, though it should not be
severe. Also, you can expect to experience swelling and bruising.
Also, your scars will be red and noticeable, at first. However, as
time goes on, the negative impacts of the surgery will become less
and less and you will start to regain the youthful appeal of your
eyes.
In order to ensure optimal healing, the following is
recommended after this surgery:
* No heavy lifting
*
No straining
* No swimming
* No
strenuous activities of any kind, such as exercising
*
Keep your eyes protected by wearing sunglasses when you are
exposed to the sun and the wind
* Elevate your head
while you sleep, so as to keep swelling at a minimum
*
Keep the area clean and lubricated.
Make sure to follow
all of your doctor’s orders for the care and maintenance of your
eyes after the surgery. Not doing so can result in damage, injury and
may prolong the healing process.
The Benefits of
Blepharoplasty
The benefits of this type of eye surgery
are obvious. It will help to reduce the excess skin that has been
bulging and sagging around your eyes. This will not only help to
improve your look, but it will also help to improve your vision, if
your vision was impacted by this excessive skin.
If you have
been suffering from extra skin around your eyes, blepharoplasty may
be the right option for you.
