ALERT!!!! This is for parents
I am from Barbados, which means I follow the career of our superstar Rihanna very closely. Now, Rihanna had a concert at home in Barbados earlier this month at Kensington Oval ... the biggest place on the island which can hold the thousands of persons attending the show. Now, this article is not about Rihanna in particular but celebrities in general.
In the few weeks after the show I have been hearing talk about Rihanna shouldn't do this and Rihanna shouldn't do that. My question was and why not? The answer I received from supposedly educated persons was 'because she is a role model'. let me say this to you reader 'that answer FAIL'.
There is NO celebrity in the world that is a ROLE MODEL. PARENTS listen and listen well. YOU are your child's role model ... if someone that your child have never met, has more clout than you in the life of YOUR child, then something is seriously wrong with your Parent-child relationship.
I live in the Caribbean, which means when I was growing up, I was listening to Calypso, Reggae, Dancehall, and Dub (if you don't know what dub is ... it is a form of music that involves dancing in a not so polite manner). The girls in the music videos where in next skin to nothing and doing some movements that would make your grandmother hold her head.
Now that said ... I never thought of any of these people as ROLE MODELS. My mother was who I listened to and copied.
STOP letting the internet, Tv and other media raise your children. Take responsibility for their lives and they would respect you and themselves and learn right from wrong. Then you would not have to worry about what a CELEBRITY is doing, because they would have no influence your child.
