Usually people who see pets traveling with their owners notice one of the two things, they either seem very calm comfortable or they don’t. If this stops you from taking your pet along on trips then we are here to take away this fear. Taking a trip with your pet is an altogether different experience and every pet parent should do this. To ensure a hassle free journey with your four legged friend, here are some tips you need to follow.

Before we get around to the list of tips here are few questions you need be sure of:

·         Does the airline allow you to carry your pet in the cabin with you?

·         What are the specific requirements for the airline pet carriers?

·         Do you need to fulfil any specific health and immunization requirements for your pet?

Once you have answers to all these questions you can follow the tips below for a safe and fun filled journey with your furry friend.

Health certificate

Whether your airline asks for it or they don’t, as a responsible pet parent you need to visit the vet and ask them to issue a health certificate for your pet. It also reassures you that your pet is fit to take the trip.

Non-peak flights

If your pet is not too comfortable when surrounded by a lot of people, it’s best to book tickets for a non-peak flight. This will give you more room and less stress to your pet.

Appropriate carrier

A wide range of carriers are available these days, confirm with your airline which type of carrier you need to purchase. As long as it is an airline approved pet carrier it should be fine but most airlines also have a few of their own separate regulations. Choose the correct size, which has enough room for your pet to lie down, move and sit comfortably. Apart from ventilation also check whether the locks are secure and there’s no way of escaping.

Carrier familiarization

Purchase the pet carrier in advance and don’t wait for the last few days to get your pet to feel comfortable inside. Your pet needs at least a month’s time to get acquainted with it. This is to minimize the stress during travel. If your pooch has a favorite item or toy put it in his/her carrier so that he feels comfortable during the journey.
