Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a branch of aviation studies with a great career scope and many opportunities in the near future. The course is best suited for students who love practical science and are capable of adapting to challenges in the working sector. The course deals with maintaining an aircraft in airworthiness condition during the entire flight and the actions to make it perfect for every flight taking place at ground level. After completing this course the student will get a license for certifying an aircraft. The responsibility of issuing a fitness certificate after proper inspection and maintenance works is what is the job profile of an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.  Aircraft with each specification need a dedicated Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. Also, the scale of maintenance and repairing required to make an aircraft fit to fly is what determines the degree of license.  Different licenses are required for different aircraft. Depending on this fact Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course of study is primarily classified into 2 major branches.

Category A and Category B.

Category A of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians and has 4 different streams for Piston and Jet Engine aircraft.

  • A1: The license holder is responsible for rectifying and correcting simple issues of the piston airplanes

  • A2: The license holder is responsible for rectifying and correcting simple issues of the Jet airplanes

  • A3: The license holder is responsible for rectifying and correcting simple issues with the piston Helicopters

  • A4: The license holder is responsible for rectifying and correcting simple issues of the Jet Helicopters

Further Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is classified into Category B1 and B2

B1 is the Mechanical stream of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and this category of AME is an advanced version of category A. Category B is subdivided into B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, and B1.4. Like Category A1, A2, A3, and A4, categories B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, and B1.4 is related to piston and jet engine-powered aircraft. But the license holders have to do more detailed troubleshooting, repairing, maintenance, and upgrading of Aircraft.

B2 Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is related to electronics and commonly known as the Avionics stream. The license holders of this course deal with the electrical/electronic parts of airplanes and helicopters.
