Agra the glorious city of Taj Mahal the symbol of love The earliest mention of Agra, like Delhi is found in the Indian epic Mahabharata as Agrabana (Paradise) while another theory describes the city Agragriha or one of the earliest home of the Aryans. But, historical evidence date it back to only 500 years. After Trimurlane's invasion, a bruised and battered Delhi was the target of many nobles, but finally, the Lodi dynasty was successful in capturing it, Sikandar Lodi decided to shift his capital from delhi to Agra in order to have a better control over his empire.
Agra grew into an important cultural and commercial center in 1500 AD. After Sikandar's death, his son ibrahim Lodi lost battle of Panipat in 1526 AD to Babur, an Afghan noble, who become the first Mughal monarch. He also paved the way for the rule of the Mughal's in India. From the reign of Babur to that of Shah Jahan in a period spanning over 100 years, Agra become synonymous with the Mughals and witnessed a glorious era of immense wealth, unparalleled enterprise and artistic talent.
Shah Jahan ruled for 30 years, inheriting one of the richest empires of the world, with an overflowing treasury, rubies and diamonds including the famous Peacock Throne. He also encouraged and patronized merchants, jewelers, artisans, poets, musicians and artist during his reign. But his happiness was short lived, Because in the fourth year of his reign, his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died, leaving him shattered and heartbroken, Shah Jahan Built the Taj Mahal, one of the greates monuments of love, in her memory.
Agra has come a long way from the day when stories of the Mughal wealth and splendour surrounding its fairy tails courts were famous across the seven seas. Today it is like any other urban city of northern India, yet it is different because it retains its medieval essence.
