A Winter Checklist For Your Camper.

by Chris Bernard Professional Blogger
1.    Know your fuel:

If your camper engine runs on diesel, you must know that diesel fuel contains paraffin that can make it gelatinous when the temperatures drop and it really gets cold during winters. You need to use the right winter blend to prevent such an occurrence.

The higher the cetane rate goes at the gas pump, the less the chances for the fuel to get gelled and get rough on the engine.

Most of the fuelling stations provide a specialized winter blend during the winter months of the year. You need to make sure to use the fuel option that has the highest cetane rating.

Make sure to keep you tank at least half full so that you do not have to face water separation issues and problems of freezing. In case this becomes an issue with your fuel, make sure to replace your fuel filter.

2.    Install a block heater:

Even if you have the right fuel, starting an engine during cold weather goes really hard on diesel engines.

Install a block heater and schedule the rest periods at truck stops where you can get the provision of plugging it in.

This will help you keep your engine warm and it will be easier for you to start when it is time to get your camper back on the road.

3.    Keep an eye on the oil levels:

Just as your engine needs the fuel, your camper engine also needs the oil. Cold weather tends to reduce lubrication. Hence, get an experienced camper mechanic and get consultation for choosing the best option for oil.

You must use a winter variety that does not get thick in the winter months and becomes useless.

4.    Go for winter tyres:

If you are planning on climbing icy hills as you deliver loads all through the winter months, you must be aware that all-weather tyres will not be the best option for your camper.

Upgrade your tyres to winter tyres so that you can enjoy a better and improved traction on steep slopes of ice and snow.

When you will be travelling, make sure to check your tyre inflation very frequently, maybe more frequently than you would require to check during the summer months.
You need to keep checking because tyres lose pressure in cold temperatures and this is likely to affect the course of your traction.

Also, make sure to not over-inflate your camper tyres because if you do so, there will be risks of tread separation and damage by toad potholes and debris.

5.    Test your battery:

Extreme temperatures always go rough on engine batteries. The main cause of camper engine breakdowns id dead batteries.

If you know that you are towards the end of your battery lifecycle, make sure to replace it before you get into any extensive driving.

Conclusion:

All the above factors are an integral part of your winter checklist to save your camper from any damage due to winter adversities. These inputs from the experts of Camper Repair Michigan are likely to help you a long way.
