A Trip to the Colosseum

by Solo Traveler Book Online Europe tours and tickets

If you’re heading to Rome, then a trip to the Colosseum is an absolute must.  The Colosseum is one of the most significant sites in the world and if you’re in the beautiful Italian capital, then it cannot be overlooked.  The Colosseum is to Rome what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, what Big Ben is to London and what the Statue of Liberty is to New York.  This iconic structure is representative of an entire country, its culture, history, and people. So, what’s the Colosseum

The Colosseum, or the Flavian Amphitheatre as it is officially dubbed, is an amphitheater.  In fact, it is the largest amphitheater ever built. During the Roman Empire, amphitheaters were used to stage violently bloody gladiatorial clashes between gladiators, slaves, prisoners and even wild animals imported from the far reaches of the empire!

The Colosseum was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian between 70 and 72 AD although he never saw it finished and it was his son, Emperor Titus who completed the project.  With a capacity of 65,000 people, when the mammoth structure was finished in 80 AD, Emperor Titus marked its unveiling with 100 straight days of games.

People from all across the empire flocked to the city to watch violent contests and glorious reenactments of Roman victories.  One such reenactment involved flooding the whole Colosseum to recreate a sea battle!

Tips on Visting

If you plan on visiting the Colosseum in the summer, know that this is peak season and there will be big crowds.  As is often the case with busy attractions, wait times can be horrendous.  So, rather than stand around under the hot, Italian sun book your tickets online and in advance.  This will save you lots of time.  To save even more time, look for tickets with fast track and skip the line options.

Know your Ticket

A standard ticket to the Colosseum is excellent, but will only give you general access.  This means you can walk around the Colosseum and the arena floor, but it denies you lots of other great things to see.

Other tickets will garner you access to areas like the Hypogeum.  This is the labyrinth of underground hallways and prison cells where the slaves, prisoners, gladiators and wild animals were kept before games.

There is also a ticket which allows you up onto the newly renovated and recently opened third tier.  From up here you can enjoy spectacular panoramas of Rome and get a real sense as to how big the Colosseum actually is.

Possibly one of the best options is a Colosseum Night Tour.  The imposing structure is stunning under a moonlit sky and when it is backlit.  This tour includes access to the Hypogeum too!
