A step towards the safety of street children

by Abhjeet Kumar Seo Consultant

As you walk down to the streets, markets or any other public area, a child not more than 4 or 5 comes close to you, grabs your cloths and for food, you don’t bother ignore her and walk away. The same happens when you are in a car, someone tugs at the door handle, asking for a rupee, you just don’t bother, lock you’re your and drive away. This is common enough at the crossroads in Delhi and many other cities of India. Every year thousands of immigrant families comes to Delhi in search of employment and can be find living in streets. The children grow up on the streets having to fend themselves and for sake of surviving and food they start begging or can find them with performing acrobatics and begging for a reward or dodging between vehicles to sell their products. You must have gone through these situation many times and must have thought that why isn’t anyone doing something about street children?

Between feeling upset and wanting to help these street children enjoy basic necessities of life, including going to school, many of us wonder about their hard lives. For the cause, “Save the Children” the NGO for children, in association with the institute for Human Development, Delhi, has now tried to supplement the data for child protection on some 51,000 children, below 18 living on the streets. As the metropolitan cities like Delhi with Mumbai and Calcutta, is a home to the largest number of street-dwellers, are chosen for the first detailed study, which hopefully will draw the attention of the government for the development of street children.

As children living in streets don’t have permanent address of living and in the absence of ID cards, and majority miss out the benefits of government schemes to educate themselves or acquire skills. So later on these children are driven from schools to streets and into factories and they are treated in a worse way. So Save the Children have raised the detailed study on the safety of street children, the policy that make policy makers to think upon the issue and provide the street children more human life choices.
