A Safe Workplace Culture with Incentive Programs
by Nichole Gunn VP of MarketingEmployee incentive programs and strong company
leadership promotes a ‘safe’ oriented workplace culture.
Having a safe workplace culture, according to business
leaders can lead to a number of overall benefits, including:
- Increased
productivity
- Increase
morale
- Improved
employee retention
- Reduced operating costs
To create this type of safe environment, notable changes are
needed to establish a safe culture shift in employees. Jonathan Theders,
president of Clark-Theders Insurance Agency, told the publication that “good
safety cultures find ways to continue to focus on safety because they know what
the ultimate downside could be.”
As with any chain of command, to effectually produce change
and the desired result, change, and effort from the top needs to be implemented
first. It also requires ongoing effort; change does not happen overnight.
Clearly defined rules need to be in place, and they must be reinforced with incentives
for meeting and exceeding goals, and penalties for not doing so.
Motivating employees to meet change head-on may be
accomplished through employee incentive programs. The source notes that
“recognizing positive action is just as important as stopping negative
actions.” To help employees meet the challenge, they need to be aware of the
long-term effects of their actions.
When initiating change and incentive programs, it’s
important to know that some strategies are more useful than others. According
to EHS Today, incentive marketing expert Sean Roark said that "merchandise rewards showed a much stronger response than cash.”
