A Penny Saved.. is a Gnome?
As many of you who correspond with me regularly know my signature has not only a link or two in it but also a quotation. Usually it is from "The Musings of the White Raven"
I received an eMail the other day wondering where I acquired these Gnomes. I like to think of myself as fairly versatile in the English vernacular but this one had me stumped, so off I went to find me a Gnome.
Guess what ... it is in actual fact a term that was used correctly to define the type of short sayings that I use! Curious, I went ahead and looked up other terms that relate to the same subject (short sayings).
Imagine my surprise when the expected 3 or 4 turned out to be 16 different terms that define subtle differences in type and usage. There are sub terms to many of them but I just want to share the basic ones with you my friends and readers.
So here they are.... I hope you enjoy them.

Very true Benedict, as with most things some definitions cross the lines so that they actually fit one or more categories

my personal favorite short sayings are quips and witticisms because they have a strong humor element to them.

there are also certain sayings that can either be aphorisms or gnomes depending on the context. For example, in it's original context, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, either way you are right," is considered to be a gnome, but in the context of an isolated quote, it seems like it would be considered an aphorism.
