A Guide to Installing a Cavity Sliding Door

by Tint Fx Home, Glasses, Window, Tinting

For everyone except those with extremely large properties and almost unlimited budgets, space is often a problem. It constrains what you can do so there are invariably attempts to make the best use of available space.

Doors are often a restricting factor, with traditional hinged doors needing room to swing. Even sliding doors generally need space to accommodate the opened panels. That’s unless you have cavity sliding glass doors, which give a feeling of openness and require relatively little space, providing you install them properly.

Preparation is Key to a Successful Installation

Cavity sliding doors can be constructed from a variety of materials, come in various sizes, are top hung from a track and are designed to be hidden away within a stud wall when closed. A solid wall may therefore cause a problem, especially if it’s load-bearing since it will need to be held up while the frame, cavity and door gear are installed. Most doors will slide straight into the cavity but, where additional support is needed, a metal cage or cassette will create a pocket for the door to slide into.

The wall area at the side of the door has to be sufficiently wide to take the sliding panel when the door is open. It also needs to be free of pipework, electrical wiring, light switches and anything else that may obstruct the free movement of the door. Alternative arrangements need to be made if these are present.

Heavier and larger doors will always require more preparation and care in their installation but the impression they make will be worth it. You can also have a choice of fittings, from door pulls to locks, that make the door easy to use and fully secure.

Finishing Touches

Cavity sliding doors are useable anywhere, whether internally or as external doors. They’re particularly suitable for bathrooms and ensuites where there’s plenty of moisture about but, again, they have to be installed correctly. That means making sure the door and frame are properly sealed so no water gets through and ensuring the wall is strengthened if heavy tiles are affixed.

If you choose your doors carefully and install them properly, you’ll be assured of many years of trouble-free and smooth operation in addition to the practicality and great looks.
