A Gibraltar Wedding Is Great For Indulging Your Inner Foodie

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

What with Gibraltar only having a population of about 32,000 people and being famously multicultural, it’s understandable that many casual observers may not presume it to have much of a culinary identity of its own. But of course, that simply isn’t true.

In fact, it’s the very mix of influences that the territory has been subject to down the years from incomers that has helped to give it a rewardingly distinctive approach to gastronomy today.

A proudly cosmopolitan land, with proudly cosmopolitan cuisine

Cast your eye over the typical Gibraltarian restaurant menu, or even look around its streets at some of the eateries, and you’ll see signs of the various British, Spanish, Genoese and Maltese influences that have been instrumental in making the territory’s culinary scene so unique in 2019.

Indeed, it’s the chance to experience a certain reassuringly ‘home from home’ feel in their choice of overseas destination for their nuptials, but also a touch of the exotic, that leads so many Britons to contact our Gibraltar Wedding Specialists in the first place.

So, yes, you can help yourself to some good old-fashioned British fish and chips, but also the likes of tapas, meats and pasta. Savoury breads are a key part of the local diet too, not least the baked pancake-like dish known as calentita, which is made with chickpea flour, water, olive oil, salt and pepper, as well as a similarly bread-like offering called panissa.

A history like no other – and food like no other, too

Much of Gibraltar cuisine today has a lot to do with the territory’s intriguing, but also sometimes conflict-ridden history. Many traditional dishes in Gibraltar were very simple due to the extreme restrictions on resources imposed by the 1779-1783 Great Siege, during which the British army fended off French and Spanish advances.

Fast-forward to 1969 to 1985, and the closed border with Spain under the dictatorship of Franco also affected Gibraltar’s contact with the outside world, although not to the same extreme extent.

In short, Gibraltarian cuisine has continued to develop and even thrive during times when all but the most obvious staples have been in short supply, all of which has helped to make it more than just a straightforward mix of British and Andalucían dishes.

Tie the knot, and tuck into delectable cuisine!
