A Comprehensive Guide to Decoding Your Car’s Unnecessary Vibration

by Totton Tyre & Exhaust Auto Garage for car Servicing

Cars are built inherently to provide the riders as smooth a drive as possible. Modern cars, with all their complex mechanisms, ensure that in no small extent. The excellent shock absorbers, smooth-rolling tyres and various other parts come together to cushion the impact of uneven roads, curbs and potholes.

In a perfect world, these would keep working flawlessly for eternity. However, since we are a long way from that, they tend to break down from time to time and make your ride as uncomfortable as Lance Armstrong during a dope test.

Fret not; you would be neither the first nor the last person to suffer a bumpy ride. The key here is awareness so that you can identify and rip the issue at its bud. There are various components whose malfunction would cause your vehicle to jerk uncontrollably.

There are three situations where you may feel these jolts; when the vehicle is idle, when it is accelerating and when it is moving. They have different reasons, and here is a little about all of them here.

Shaking while idle

It is rather uncommon and very few people ever feel this. However, it’s not unheard of, and you’ll do well to be aware of its causes, which are:

  • A dysfunctional motor mount.

  • A problem in the fuel system.

Both of these are potentially significant issues, and you should take your car to an authorised car service centre such as Totton Tyre & Exhaust for professional attention. Their engineers are some of the best in the industry who will repair the issue, and also prepare your car for an MOT Totton.

Shaking while accelerating

There have been noted instances where drivers felt a very tangible jerking while accelerating. It may happen if:

  • The level of transmission fluid is lower than recommended. Check for the fluid level with a dipstick. Refill the fluid ASAP, and your car will be smooth as butter again.

  • The U-joint has worn out or broken. It’s located near the driveshaft and needs expert hands to fix.

  • The filter in the transmission is clogged or otherwise damaged. The transmission filter requires changing every 30,000 miles and chances are you have neglected it for much longer. Replace it if it’s damaged; if it’s just clogged, you can clean it yourself.

Shaking at high speeds

This is, without a speck of doubt, the scariest of all. You will feel the vibrations through the floorboard or the steering wheel.

There may be various reasons for it:

  • Unbalanced wheels

  • Worn out shocks

  • Loose ball joints

  • Tie rod misalignment

Unfortunately, none of these are DIY-friendly. You need professional help to get these fixed. What you can do is take care of your car to the best of your abilities to prevent these from happening.

  1. Keep a routine check on the transmission fluid level.

  2. Clean or change the filter at least once a year.

  3. Do not skip on your maintenance schedule and ask your mechanic to check everything from transmission to car tyres in Totton.

If you feel vibrations even after that, the best option will be to take your car to a service station. Avoiding it will do you no good. You will be the one driving an unsafe vehicle all the way through.
