A Complete Overview of Stainless-Steel Casting Process

Stainless steel is an incredible metal having characteristics of rust resistance, low maintenance, cost-effectiveness. Since it is resistive to corrosion, it is preferred in highly aggressive conditions. When it comes to Stainless steel casting, the metal alloys are heated up to a specific temperature above their melting point, and later, the melted metal is transferred into the mould and form a new shape after solidifying.

Mould Making   

It is an important step in designing stainless steel moulds and produced as per the exact shape of the product. In general, stainless-steel mould is divided into upper and lower concave moulds. They are finished by various machining processes like turning, milling and so on.   

The stainless-steel casting model is made up of wax by pressing industrial wax; the material used to make the mould for casting is selected by aluminium alloy. It has a low melting point and low hardness. Moreover, it is a cost-effective and lightweight material.  

Wax Model & Tree Assembly Making   

After preparing the casting mould, many wax models are produced by injecting industrial wax into aluminium alloy mould and then taking it out after cooling. Under normal conditions, wax model making is well suited for Stainless steel casting parts as well as Power Generation.

Once the wax gets set in the mould, it later takes out to form a shape. Once experts check its dimension, it is welded one by one and assembled like a tree, also known as tree assembly.   

Sand Shell Making   

The next step in steel casting is shell making. In this process, the entire assembly is dipped into the whole silica sol process and sprinkled with fire-resistant sand to dry and harden the shell at a certain temperature. This step is ideally used for preparing the model for the further baking process. The baking process eventually improves the brittleness of the sand layer, and after breaking it, it takes out the casting blank.  


In this process, a high temperature (approx. 1000°C) is used to melt the wax inside the shell and flow out along the spurge gate. After the wax is drained, it gets left with an empty shell where the molten metal can be poured. 


Pouring and Surface   

Next step is to melt the stainless-steel ingot, pour it into the dewaxed sand shell, and cool it at room temperature for desired results. After cooling and solidification, knock out the residues and polish them to get the polished product.  


Once all the production is done, inspection is also an indispensable process performed before delivery to ensure products are cast well. The inspection process includes checking dimensions, defects and material condition checks. The product that only gets approved by the inspector is optimal for delivering products to customers.
