A Complete Guide to Help Choose Your First Piano

by Harsith Kumar Business Executive

Getting piano lessons is different, but actually going forward to buy a new piano can be pretty exciting. But before you can embark on your musical journey, you have to choose the right piano, which can be confusing, overwhelming and a tad bit too exhausting. Here, you will find the important factors to consider and the things to look out for when you are buying a new piano.

How to Decide which Type you Want?

The first thing you really need to consider is to know the different types of beginner pianos out there before you buy one, like an acoustic or electric piano, and their ideal basic features. Furthermore, you need to consider your musical status – whether you are a beginner, intermediate player or a pro. Then, will come to what purpose will you be using your piano for, like, will you be composing music on it, or performing in gigs and concerts among others.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Piano

1.The Sound

Before buying any piano, try playing it for a little while to determine whether you like the sound or not. This is subjective; some people prefer a brighter tone, while others prefer a mellower tone. Generally, a good piano sound is round and full. A digital piano produces sound by playing pre-recorded sounds of acoustic pianos. Hence, you should buy an electric piano with a better control over articulation and decay more closely resembling an acoustic piano, thus sounding more natural.

2. The Keys

Ensure that the keys have a smooth surface and are free of damages and cracks. When you play the piano, the keys should have adequate resistance. If playing the keys requires as little strength as typing on a computer keyboard, the keys probably don’t have enough resistance. Lastly, when you strike the keys, there should be enough cushioning to reduce the shock transmitted to your finger joints.

3.Number of Keys

A full-sized piano consists of 88 keys. However, some digital pianos come with only 61 or fewer keys. For advanced piano players, a piano with 88 keys is required. Therefore, if you’re a beginner who’s serious about learning the piano, it is advisable for you to get a full-sized piano.

4. Touch response of the keys

Touch-sensitivity refers to how responsive a piano is when you play a key with different amounts of strength. The keyboard is able to sense the velocity with which you play the key and correspondingly produces a sound of appropriate volume.

Acoustic Piano

Acoustic pianos are those traditional pianos that people associate with the term piano. On an acoustic piano, when you play a key, the sound is produced as a felt-tipped hammer strikes the appropriate metal string placed inside. Here is a list of things to look out for before buying a grand acoustic or upright acoustic piano.

Digital Piano

A digital piano, also referred to as a keyboard is definitely the best option standing next to a grand acoustic piano. It comes off as a much more affordable and convenient option as acoustic pianos tend to be very expensive, buying an electric piano is better than buying no piano at all.  You will be able to spend more time practicing, and with a digital piano, you can lower the volume or turn it off so as not to bother the people at your home. You may learn on a digital piano, and then you can later choose to buy an acoustic.
