Businesses often divide digital marketing among different
specialists. One team handles paid advertising, another handles SEO, somebody
posts on social media and the website is maintained by whoever still remembers
the password.
Constantin Malanciuc argues that customers do not experience
those channels separately. They experience one business. In this interview, he
explains why the website should sit at the centre of the system, how original
content supports every channel and what owners should measure when they want
growth rather than activity.
Why do companies struggle when different agencies control
separate channels?
Constantin Malanciuc: Specialisation is useful,
but fragmentation is expensive. The SEO team can chase traffic to one page
while paid advertising sends people somewhere else. Social media can use
different language from the website. Sales can record lead sources differently
from marketing. Everybody produces a report and nobody can explain the revenue.
The business needs one commercial view across the channels.
Specialists can still own their areas, but the offer, data definitions,
customer journey and priorities must be shared.
What role should the website play?
Constantin: It is the central source of truth.
Social platforms can change reach. Advertising stops when the budget stops. The
website is where the business can explain its services fully, show proof,
answer questions and create a conversion route it controls.
It should also connect the channels. A video should point to
a relevant page, not always the homepage. A Google Business Profile should lead
to the page that continues the local intent. An email campaign should have a
landing page built for that message. The tracking should follow the same
journey.
How should SEO and paid advertising support each other?
Constantin: Paid search provides immediate data.
It shows which searches produce enquiries, which offers attract attention and
which landing pages convert. SEO can use that information to prioritise
services and content.
SEO creates stronger landing pages, answers questions and
builds trust. That can improve what paid visitors see after the click. Organic
visibility can also cover searches that would be expensive to buy continuously.
The mistake is treating them like rival departments. The
customer may use both before contacting the business.
Where do social media, reviews and email fit?
Constantin: Social media shows that the business
is alive. Reviews show that other people trusted it. Email keeps a relationship
going after the first contact or transaction.
I like a broad, maintained presence, but I do not believe
every channel deserves equal production. Keep the relevant profiles accurate
and active, even if some receive one useful post a month. Then choose one main
channel and push it properly.
YouTube is important because useful videos can keep being
discovered, and short-form clips can be reused across several networks.
Instagram or Facebook may be the main channel for a visual consumer business.
LinkedIn may be the main channel for a consultant or B2B service. The answer
depends on where the right customers are and what the business can create
consistently.
Reddit can be valuable when the business participates and
answers questions. It is not valuable when the profile exists only to leave
links. People can smell that from orbit.
You also work with photography. What does original visual
content add?
Constantin: It proves the business exists and
does the work it claims to do.
Original photographs and video can show the team, equipment,
process, locations, finished results and small details customers care about.
That material improves service pages, location
pages, case studies, social media, YouTube, advertising and sales
follow-up.
AI can help edit, organise and repurpose the material. It
cannot go back and photograph a real job that nobody documented. Original
content is business evidence.
Which metrics do business owners actually need?
Constantin: Start with spend, enquiries,
qualified opportunities, quotations, bookings and revenue. Add gross margin
where possible. Then break those results down by channel, service and location.
Traffic, rankings, clicks, impressions, video views and
engagement help explain the pipeline. They are useful, but they are supporting
metrics. If they rise while qualified work falls, the business has a problem.
Why does attribution often break between the website and the
CRM?
Constantin: Because several systems are writing
different versions of the truth. Forms may use one source label, calls another
and salespeople another. Cookies disappear. Customers use several devices. A
person sees a video, searches the brand and calls from a number found on the
Google profile.
Perfect attribution is not realistic, but disciplined
attribution is. Standardise source names. Preserve click identifiers where
appropriate. Connect calls and forms to the CRM. Track changes in source rules.
Reconcile samples manually. Most importantly, compare leads according to when
they entered the pipeline, then allow enough time for them to close.
What happens when a business hires experts but ignores their
advice?
Constantin: It pays for expertise and then
chooses guesswork. That is an expensive hobby.
An expert can still be wrong, so recommendations should come
with evidence and reasoning. The business should challenge the recommendation
when needed. But hiring somebody, refusing every material change and then
blaming them for the unchanged result makes no sense.
Good consulting is not blind agreement. It is a clear
decision process with responsibilities on both sides.
How should an external consultant work with an internal
team?
Constantin: The consultant should make
priorities clear, explain why they matter and define what success looks like.
The internal team should provide the information outsiders cannot invent:
operational changes, customer objections, sales outcomes, photographs,
availability and what is actually happening in the business.
There should be one owner for decisions. "And so
on" is a profit funeral. Scope, responsibilities, deadlines and
measurement need to be specific.
Which marketing tasks will AI automate?
Constantin: A lot of research, drafting,
repurposing, coding, reporting and quality checks will become faster. Agents
will move information between systems and complete routine tasks with less
supervision.
Human judgement remains important in positioning, customer
understanding, creative direction, ethics, prioritisation and deciding whether
the data makes sense. AI is very good at producing an answer. It is not
automatically good at recognising that the business asked the wrong question.
What does an integrated marketing system look like in
practice?
Constantin: The business has a clear offer. The
website explains it and converts it. SEO captures existing demand. Paid media
creates immediate reach and testing. Original photographs and videos feed the
website, social channels and YouTube. Reviews provide proof. Email follows up
and creates repeat business. The CRM records what happened. Reporting connects
the lead to the commercial outcome.
Then the team uses the data to decide what to do next.
That is the point. Marketing should not be a collection of
activities. It should be a system that helps the business make better decisions
and win more of the right work.
