It is common among women with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) to take ‘off-label’ Metformin as their first-line treatment, alongside a good diet and a healthy lifestyle. However, with the advancement in PCOS research, we now know that Inositol (Myo & D-chiro-inositol) is also effective for PCOS treatment by balancing hormones, improving insulin resistance, and reducing androgens. Therefore, it begs the question: are they both equally effective?

Metformin for PCOS

Metformin is a medication used to treat diabetes by making the body more sensitive to insulin and its processes. Linked to the research that finds that women with PCOS have a higher rate of insulin resistance, Metformin naturally becomes a treatment option.

The medication has proven to help with regular menstrual cycles and weight loss, especially for women with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI). These positive effects lead to increased ovulation, making Metformin a reliable treatment for women with PCOS hoping to conceive.

However, Metformin can cause unwanted side effects, such as nausea, bloating, stomach pain, and other gastrointestinal side effects.

How Does Inositol Help With PCOS?

Inositol is a newer treatment option compared to Metformin. Research suggests that Inositol acts as the ‘secondary messenger’ that induces insulin signalling. Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol work in tandem to improve glucose uptake in the body, improve insulin resistance, and reduce androgens in the body. The Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol 40:1 ratio is deemed the best at managing PCOS-related symptoms.

Usually, Inositol is used as a second or third-line treatment after Metformin and contraceptive pills. But, more studies found that Inositol causes little to no side effects compared to Metformin. Therefore, it's more common for women with PCOS to seek Inositol for long-term treatment.

Are Metformin and Inositol Equally Effective?

Depending on the person, Metformin and Inositol can be effective. Women who have taken Metformin without lasting side effects tend to use it for long-term PCOS management. Women who experienced unwanted side effects from Metformin usually turn to Inositol to get similar results. It’s also not uncommon for women to take both Metformin and Inositol together to manage their PCOS. Therefore, both of these medications are effective.

A Good Diet Is Always the Key

When dealing with PCOS, having a good diet and a healthy lifestyle is still the most important. Metformin and Inositol help with metabolic functions, and taking care of your body will support better health in the long term. Focus on low-GI foods such as grains and fruits, lean protein, and healthy fats. It’s also a good idea to have a healthy balance of vitamins. For example, women with PCOS usually deal with a Vitamin D deficiency, so having Metformin and Inositol with Vitamin D can help.

Check with a Health Professional

Always refer to health professionals on what medication/supplement to take for PCOS. Ask for their expertise when choosing what supplement to consume, how it will affect you, and what outcomes you can expect.

Managing PCOS is a long-term effort, and it’s best to have professional support to keep you safe, healthy, and comfortable.
