The Toyota Hilux is a pickup truck made by Toyota since 1968. Originally a small work truck, it has become a versatile vehicle for work and daily use. The Hilux offers petrol and diesel engines, with two- or four-wheel drive. It comes in three versions: Single Cabin (two doors, two seats, long flatbed), Extra Cabin (small rear doors, small back seat, long flatbed), and Double Cabin (four doors, five seats, short flatbed). Although there is more competition today, the Hilux is still valued for its reliability and usefulness.

Specifications

The Toyota Hilux has used many different engines since it was first made in 1968. The first Hilux had a 1.5-liter (2R) engine, and over the years, it has had many 4-cylinder and some 6-cylinder engines, ranging from 1.5 liters to 3.0 liters. Here, we will look at two of the newest engines in the latest Hilux models. The eighth-generation Hilux comes with a turbocharged 2.4-liter (2GD-FTV) 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 150 horsepower. This engine can tow up to 3,500 kg or carry up to 1 ton in the back. It goes from 0 to 100 kph in 13.2 seconds with a manual and 12.7 seconds with an automatic. The top speed is 169 kph. In 2020, the Hilux got a new look, and a turbocharged 2.8-liter (1GD-FTV) 4-cylinder diesel engine with 204 horsepower was added for the first time. This engine goes from 0 to 100 kph in 10.1 seconds with a manual and 10.7 seconds with an automatic. These engines send power to the wheels through a five-speed manual, five-speed automatic, six-speed manual, or six-speed automatic transmission.

Interior & Exterior

The 2021 Toyota Hilux features a redesigned binnacle, standard digital speedometer, trip computer, and a new 8-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring. Seat numbers depend on the model: single cabin (two seats), extra cabin (four seats, less comfortable rear seats), and double cab (five seats with ISOFIX child seat anchors).

The latest Hilux balances work practicality and family comfort, offering a one-ton load capacity and a range of trims from basic to high-spec. Single and Extra Cabins focus on work and are available in basic trims or as Tippers/Dropsides. All models include LED headlights, DRLs, LED tail-lamps, and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Other Features

The Toyota Hilux combines comfort, convenience, and advanced safety features. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, automatic wipers and headlights, steering wheel audio controls, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free use. Toyota Safety Sense, standard on all models, provides road sign assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision alert, Downhill Assist Control, autonomous emergency braking, and road-sign recognition to enhance driver awareness and protection. Passive safety features include whiplash-reducing seats, stability and traction control, hill-start assist, seven airbags, and trailer sway control, which keeps towing safe. Altogether, these features make the Hilux both capable and one of the safest pickups available.

Finally

The Toyota Hilux has long been known for its tough build, dependability, and reliability. The latest model is even more family-friendly and works well for recreational use. In this review, we found that the Hilux continues to improve, and the Double Cab now offers a great balance for both work and family activities.
