Keeping hold of employees can be quite difficult for modern businesses. It seems now more than ever before, employees have more demands/expectations from their workplace. That being said, it is much more affordable to keep staff rather than to hire new professionals and train them how you want them to be trained.

Starts With The Hiring Process

Many companies don’t understand the importance of the hiring process. You need to ensure that you are not only hiring someone qualified for the job but also someone who fits the work culture. This is very important as they will be spending 5 days with their work colleagues.

Another way to ensure that you are hiring the right person is to let them know the career path that they will be on. Not to mention the company goals. Do the company's goals align with theirs? Are they willing to put in the effort to help your company get to where it needs to be?

Reward Your Employees

Although some employees don’t want recognition for their hard work. That being said, there are also a lot of people who do want recognition for their efforts. This can either be in public or private. It can also include an email that has all of your employees within it. However, you can go with a more discreet way of rewarding and recognising your employees' hard work. This can either be in 1 to 1 meetings with them, via email to them or just casually in person.

You should know how your employees will want to be praised, and if you don’t, then the best method would be to send an email.

Discuss a Clear Path

We briefly touched on this before, but it is definitely worth discussing with your employees what type of path they wish to pursue with your company. Some people are very content with how things are going with their day-to-day lives at work; however, others wish to work towards something. This could be something as little as a promotion or working with clients more. It can also be leading a team. Whatever it is, it is essential that you discuss this with them and set them some goals which they can achieve.

At the end of the day, you don’t want your employees to feel like they have become stagnant. Setting clear career goals for your employees is essential. That being said, some people are just there for the paycheck, but you can work this out the more you have one-on-one conversations with them.

To Conclude

Employee retention is very important and is something that you should aim to maintain as a manager or business owner. But it can be difficult. Employees want different things, and you are not going to be able to impress everyone. This is why the interview process is very important. Don’t just use the interview to work out whether they are qualified for the job. Find out more about their personality and whether or not they will fit into the work culture.

Accessibility is also something to consider to help reduce that turnover. Having access to a lift is important for those who are less mobile. A lift company can fit an accessible lift and ensure that it has regular maintenance so that your workplace is easy to get to. There must also be access to disabled toilets and plenty of space within the workplace to ensure people with wheelchairs can easily move around.
