The Night the Main Stage of Tomorrowland Caught Fire

I’d been waiting years to witness this. Tomorrowland 2025 in Belgium — widely regarded as the most highly regarded electronic music festival on the whole planet — was finally in full swing, and I was here now in front of the stunningly gargantuan main stage, absorbing the atmosphere, lights, and overall atmosphere of the festival. But no amount of preparation could ever have prepared me for what was waiting in store next.

It was to be the highlight of the weekend. The centre of the attention, this breathtaking spectacle of light, flame, water, and mythic shape, was to be shared by some of the world’s best DJs. There were a thousand or so of us all crammed in there in a compact bundle, arms waved above us, ribcage shaking to the beat of the music. And then, as the sun fell below the horizon and the opening headliner dropped a track that had the dance floor laughing hysterically, a sudden shift of atmosphere cautioned one and all that something was wrong.
