Sammed Shikharji Yatra

Sammed Shikharji Yatra is one of the most spiritual pilgrimages in Jainism. Located on the highest mountain in Jharkhand, Shikharji (also known as Sammed Shikharji) is believed to be the place where 20 out of 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained Moksha (liberation). Every year, thousands of devotees from across India and the world undertake this holy journey seeking peace, devotion, and spiritual upliftment.

The Significance of Sammed Shikharji

The word "Sammed" means a place of meditation, and "Shikharji" refers to the mountain of peaks. Together, Sammed Shikharji means the peak of liberation. This place holds deep importance in Jainism because it is associated with the Nirvana (salvation) of many Tirthankaras, including Lord Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara. The entire mountain is considered sacred, and pilgrims walk around 27-30 kilometers on foot as a mark of respect and devotion.

Location and How to Reach

Sammed Shikharji is located in Giridih district, Jharkhand, India. The nearest railway station is Parasnath Railway Station, which is around 25 kilometers from the base of the hill. From there, devotees can take a cab or bus to reach Madhuban, the starting point of the yatra. Madhuban is well-connected by road and has facilities like dharamshalas, bhojanshalas, and hospitals for pilgrims.

The Route of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra

The yatra begins from Madhuban. Pilgrims start early in the morning and walk through forest paths, hills, and sacred spots. The full path of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra covers around 27-30 kilometers and includes several important temples and tonks (shrines). Each tonk is dedicated to a Tirthankara who attained Moksha here. The highest point is known as Parshvanatha Tonk, which stands at around 4,480 feet above sea level.

Devotees walk barefoot, chant mantras, and offer prayers at each tonk. The journey is physically challenging but spiritually fulfilling. Many also choose to perform the yatra in a single day, while others may take two days with an overnight stay on the mountain.

Cultural and Spiritual Experience

The Sammed Shikharji Yatra is not just a physical journey but a deep spiritual experience. Pilgrims come with a pure heart, fasting and practicing silence. Along the way, they meet fellow Jains from different parts of the country, sharing stories of faith and devotion.

The entire area of Madhuban and Shikharji is filled with a peaceful and devotional atmosphere. The temples, carvings, and natural beauty add to the sense of calm. Special events and group yatras are organized during festivals and religious months like Kartik and Paryushan.

Facilities for Pilgrims

Madhuban, the base of the yatra, has well-developed infrastructure for pilgrims. There are many dharamshalas and bhojanshalas managed by Jain organizations. Free food and lodging are provided to yatris. Medical centers and volunteer services are also available for emergency help. Guides are available to help pilgrims understand the significance of each tonk and temple during the Sammed Shikharji Yatra.

Conclusion

The Sammed Shikharji Yatra is a soul-touching journey for every Jain devotee. It is more than just visiting temples—it is a path of devotion, penance, and self-purification. Walking through the hills where Tirthankaras achieved Moksha inspires pilgrims to follow the path of truth, non-violence, and renunciation. For those seeking inner peace and spiritual growth, the Sammed Shikharji Yatra is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
