Emerald, Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), Blue Sapphire (Neelam), Ruby (Manik), and More

In Vedic astrology, gemstones are seen as powerful tools to bring balance, strength, and clarity in one’s life. Each gemstone is linked with a specific planet, and wearing the right one can help correct planetary weaknesses or enhance positive influences. However, gemstones should never be worn casually—they are deeply connected to your birth chart and life path. In this article, we will explore five of the most widely used and respected gemstones in astrology: Emerald (Panna), Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), Blue Sapphire (Neelam stone), Ruby (Manik), and their significance in guiding your life toward success and peace.

Emerald (Also Known as Panna)

Emerald, or Panna stone in Hindi, is the gemstone associated with the planet Mercury (Budh). Mercury represents intelligence, speech, writing, communication, and commerce. Wearing an Emerald can sharpen your intellect, improve memory, and help you speak more clearly and effectively. It is especially helpful for students, writers, public speakers, and businesspeople. This gemstone is also known for its calming effects on the mind and is believed to reduce anxiety and stress.

Emerald is most beneficial for people born under Gemini (Mithun) and Virgo (Kanya) ascendants, or if Mercury is strongly placed in their birth chart. It should be worn on the little finger of the right hand, preferably set in gold or silver. The right time to wear it is on a Wednesday morning, during the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month. Before wearing, it is advised to purify the stone in milk or holy water and chant the mantra "Om Budhaya Namaha" 108 times.

However, wearing Emerald without proper consultation can lead to mental confusion or communication troubles, especially if Mercury is afflicted by malefic planets like Rahu or Saturn in your chart. That’s why it’s important to seek astrological advice before wearing it.

Yellow Sapphire (Also Known as Pukhraj or Pushparagam)

Yellow Sapphire, known as Pukhraj in Hindi or Pushparagam in Sanskrit, is linked to the planet Jupiter (Guru). Jupiter is considered the most benefic planet in astrology and represents wisdom, fortune, marriage, wealth, children, and spiritual growth. Wearing a Yellow Sapphire can bring financial prosperity, boost academic performance, and attract marriage opportunities—especially helpful for women facing delays in marriage.

It is particularly suitable for people with Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meen) ascendants, or those with a well-placed Jupiter in their horoscope. Yellow Sapphire should be worn on the index finger of the right hand, set in gold. The ideal day to wear this gemstone is on a Thursday morning during Shukla Paksha. Before wearing, purify the stone in raw milk and water, and recite the mantra "Om Brim Brihaspataye Namaha" 108 times.

Yellow Sapphire is a very auspicious stone, but it may not suit everyone. If Jupiter is weak or placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, or under the influence of malefic planets, it might bring laziness, overconfidence, or unnecessary expenses. Therefore, wearing Pukhraj should always be based on a proper astrological reading.

Blue Sapphire (Also Known as Neelam)

Blue Sapphire, called Neelam in Hindi, is the gemstone associated with Saturn (Shani)—the planet of karma, discipline, hard work, and justice. Saturn is a slow-moving planet and has a strong influence on long-term growth and life lessons. Blue Sapphire is known for its fast and powerful effects. It can bring sudden success, boost professional growth, remove obstacles, and protect the wearer from negative energies or black magic.

Neelam is especially recommended for people going through Shani Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or Saturn Mahadasha, but only after a trial and thorough analysis of the birth chart. People with Capricorn (Makar) or Aquarius (Kumbh) as their rising sign often find it beneficial. The stone is worn on the middle finger of the right hand, preferably in silver. The best day to wear it is Saturday evening, during Saturn’s hora. It should first be kept under the pillow or worn temporarily for two to three days to observe its effects. Before final wearing, the stone should be dipped in mustard oil and the mantra "Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah" should be chanted 108 times.

Because of its powerful and sometimes unpredictable effects, Blue Sapphire should never be worn without testing and consultation. If Saturn is not favorable in your chart, this gemstone can lead to anxiety, misfortune, or loss.

Ruby (Also Known as Manik or Manikya)

Ruby, or Manik stone in Hindi and Manikya in Sanskrit, is the gemstone of the Sun (Surya). The Sun in astrology represents self-esteem, soul, vitality, government, and authority. Ruby is known for increasing confidence, leadership, and ambition. It can also improve physical health and help with problems related to the heart, bones, and blood pressure.

Ruby is considered most favorable for Leo (Simha) ascendants and those with a strong or exalted Sun in their charts. It should be worn on the ring finger of the right hand, ideally set in gold. The right day to wear it is Sunday morning, ideally during sunrise. Before wearing, purify the gemstone in honey and holy water, and chant the mantra "Om Suryaya Namah" 108 times.

However, Ruby should be avoided if the Sun is placed in a malefic house or is afflicted by planets like Saturn or Rahu. It should not be worn alongside gemstones like Blue Sapphire or Diamond unless advised by an astrologer.

Pukhraj Stone (Same as Yellow Sapphire)

Sometimes people treat Pukhraj as a different gemstone, but it is simply another name for Yellow Sapphire. It is one of the most commonly recommended stones for those facing financial struggles or delay in marriage. Women in Indian families are often advised to wear Pukhraj for attracting a good life partner and ensuring family well-being.

The rules for wearing pukhraj stone are exactly the same as Yellow Sapphire, as they are the same stone. Always ensure the stone is natural, untreated, and astrologically suitable for your chart before wearing.

Final Thoughts

Gemstones have been used in astrology for thousands of years, but they should never be worn casually or just for fashion. A gemstone that suits someone else might bring problems to you if it doesn’t match your chart. The first step before wearing any gemstone is to understand your birth chart, which includes your birth date, time, place, and gender. Only then can an astrologer guide you toward the correct stone that can support your life path.

If you are going through a difficult phase in life—whether it is related to health, career, relationships, or peace of mind—a suitable gemstone may help you. But remember, gemstones are tools. Your karma, choices, and intentions are still the most important forces in shaping your destiny.
